{"id":8050,"date":"2014-09-23T00:44:42","date_gmt":"2014-09-23T00:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumarchives.tmsites.net\/index.php\/2014\/09\/23\/instead-of-boom-a-whimper-from-new-jersey-internet-gambling\/"},"modified":"2014-09-23T00:44:42","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T00:44:42","slug":"instead-of-boom-a-whimper-from-new-jersey-internet-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumarchives.tmsites.net\/index.php\/2014\/09\/23\/instead-of-boom-a-whimper-from-new-jersey-internet-gambling\/","title":{"rendered":"Instead of boom, a whimper from New Jersey Internet gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- Original Post Content --><br \/>\nHoward Stutz, Las Vegas Review-Journal \u00b7<\/p>\n<p>\tATLANTIC CITY \u2014 Internet gaming hasn\u2019t provided the windfall New Jersey officials had hoped would come and that analysts had predicted.<\/p>\n<p>\tThrough August, online wagering revenue was $83.6 million for the six casinos operating the state\u2019s websites, less than half once imagined for the market.<\/p>\n<p>\tPokerStars could change the outlook.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe Isle of Man-based online gaming giant has a deal to operate online gaming with Resorts Atlantic City.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cWe think PokerStars will help grow the market and provide New Jersey with the best product online,\u201d Resorts President Mark Giannantonio said.<\/p>\n<p>\tPokerStars was bought this year by Amaya Gaming Group of Canada for $4.9 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe website controls 54 percent of global online gaming traffic outside the United States and could be a boost to New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\tHowever, casino operators want to keep PokerStars on the sidelines. The company operated illegally in the United States after the 2006 passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. PokerStars paid a $731 million settlement to federal prosecutors two years ago to erase criminal and civil charges.<\/p>\n<p>\tBorgata President Tom Ballance agreed that PokerStars would expand New Jersey\u2019s online gaming market, where Borgata, which operates in New Jersey with Bwin.party, is market leader with 36.5 percent of all online revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cPokerStars will spend a lot of money in advertising,\u201d Ballance said. \u201cThat helps all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tHowever, Ballance and other gaming leaders are concerned PokerStars will still be able to use its database of players captured after it was operating illegally.<\/p>\n<p>\tNew Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck said the agency is investigating Amaya\u2019s buyout of PokerStars and how the management of the business has been restructured.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cWe know this is an issue of great importance to industry,\u201d Rebuck said. \u201c(PokerStars) has been out of the U.S. for three-and-a-half years already.
