{"id":8031,"date":"2014-09-18T04:46:12","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T04:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumarchives.tmsites.net\/index.php\/2014\/09\/18\/glass-containers-banned-from-las-vegas-strip\/"},"modified":"2014-09-18T04:46:12","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T04:46:12","slug":"glass-containers-banned-from-las-vegas-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumarchives.tmsites.net\/index.php\/2014\/09\/18\/glass-containers-banned-from-las-vegas-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"Glass containers banned from las Vegas Strip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- Original Post Content --><br \/>\nClark County commissioners unanimously approved a ban of glass containers and bottles on the Strip sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe decision came after hearing opposition from some small-business owners, but support from the Nevada Resort Association.<\/p>\n<p>\tOfficials said the move is necessary to improve safety and cut back on litter from broken glass on the Strip sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe county will do a review in six months to gauge the impact of the ordinance on businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\tGlass bottles and glasses are still allowed inside hotel-casinos and restaurants on the Strip \u2014 just not on the public sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>\tDrinks of any variety \u2014 alcoholic or otherwise \u2014 are still allowed on Strip sidewalks, as long they are in a container of plastic, paper or aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>\tBryan Wachter, director of government affairs for the Retail Association of Nevada, said the intent is good, but criminalizing glass containers to curb littering isn\u2019t the answer.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cWe think that this particular ordinance does miss the point of the goal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\tHe noted that ban on glass containers on sidewalks applies to all beverages, not just alcohol beverages.<\/p>\n<p>\tLas Vegas Police Deputy Chief Todd Fasulo said the ordinance would give police another tool for dealing with glass misuse on the Strip. Fasulo said crimes with glass bottles and injuries can also have the impact of shutting down a section of the Strip while police process a crime scene.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe ordinance affects all glass containers, regardless of the type of beverage. However, convenience stores on the Strip can still sell drinks in glass containers, provided the customers carry them in a sealed bag or container while on the public sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cI don\u2019t see how taking glass off the Las Vegas Strip is going to harm a business model,\u201d Commissioner Larry Brown, noting that the ordinance still allows tourists to make purchases of drinks in glass containers.<\/p>\n<p>\tVandana Chima-Bhalla, who owns a 7-Eleven on the Strip, voiced concerns about the change impacting her business, but she welcomed the county\u2019s move to review the issue in six months.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cEverything happens for a reason,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m going to make the best of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tThe ordinance will go into effect in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe recommendation originally came from the county\u2019s resort corridor work group in 2012, which looked at issues along the Strip, which stretches along Las Vegas Boulevard from Sahara Avenue to Russell Road.<\/p>\n<p>\tGlass bottles already are banned from the Strip during its New Year\u2019s Eve celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\tViolators of what would be a misdemeanor offense could face up to a $1,000 fine or up to six months of jail.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Replies:<\/h3>\n<p>No replies were posted for this topic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clark County commissioners unanimously approved a ban of glass containers and bottles on the Strip sidewalks.
