\tThe Peppermill Resorts empire is in the online poker business.<\/p>\n
\tThe privately owned operator of five Northern Nevada casinos today began Internet play within the state’s borders in a partnership with Las Vegas-based online gambling operator Ultimate Poker.<\/p>\n
\tIn a news release, the Peppermill said poker players can make deposits at the Peppermill Resort Casino Spa in Reno, the Western Village Inn & Casino in Sparks, and three hotel-casinos in Wendover on Interstate 80 at the Utah border.<\/p>\n
\t"It gives us the opportunity to bring our online poker product to the Northern Nevada market through Peppermill’s extensive customer database," Tobin Prior, CEO of Ultimate Gaming, owner of Ultimate Poker, said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\tThe Peppermill said gamblers must sign up online at PeppermillReno.com\/Ultimate to open an account and then visit any of the casinos to make a secured deposit before playing.<\/p>\n
\tThe 2013 Nevada Legislature approved legal online poker within state borders and Ultimate Gaming, owned by Las Vegas-based Station Casinos, is one of three operating websites alongside World Series of Poker, owned by Caesars Entertainment, and Real Gaming, owned by the South Point.<\/p>\n
\tBut already a Peppermill competitor in Reno, the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, has said it will not offer online poker.<\/p>\n
\tThree weeks after the Peppermill announced its plans in March, Atlantis CEO John Farahi cited "social responsibility" in contending online poker is a wedge to wide-open online gambling that would be more difficult to control than inside a brick-and-mortar casino.<\/p>\n
\t"Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you do it," Farahi told the Reno Gazette-Journal.<\/p>\n
\tOn Monday, Reno gaming analyst Ken Adams said even with the Peppermill’s start of online poker, it would be difficult now for the Atlantis to reverse course.<\/p>\n
\t"They’ve taken a pretty public stand on moral grounds. That’s hard to back up on," Adams said.<\/p>\n
\tFurthermore, he said, the online gaming option is different than if the Peppermill had added a physical amenity to its flagship South Virginia Street resort. That scenario, he said, would more likely pressure the Atlantis, several blocks to the south, to respond.<\/p>\n
\tOnline poker has been operational in Nevada for less than a year but so far, Adams said it hasn’t proven to be a "game-changer."<\/p>\n
\t"In Nevada, it’s proven to be ho-hum," he said. "In Nevada, there are not enough citizens to make a big difference. In Nevada, you have much smaller audience numbers."<\/p>\n
\tThe 2013 Legislature also authorized interstate online gaming agreements. In February, Gov. Brian Sandoval and Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed a partnership linking the states in online poker and setting the stage for broader Internet gambling.<\/p>\n
\tBut online poker between the two states has yet to begin, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.<\/p>\n
