\n\tA man who lost $500,000 playing table games at a Las Vegas casino on Super Bowl weekend is trying to get his money back because he was too drunk.<\/p>\n

\tSouthern California retiree Mark Johnston is suing the Downtown Grand for loaning him money and allowing him to play while he was blackout drunk.<\/p>\n

\tNevada law bars casinos from allowing visibly drunk patrons to gamble and from serving them comped drinks.<\/p>\n

\tJohnston\u2019s attorney, Sean Lyttle, says the Grand, which opened last November in the old part of Sin City, is countersuing Johnston for trying to shirk his gambling debts. Johnston put a stop-payment order on the markers, or casino credits, the Grand issued, and is also seeking damages from the Grand for sullying his name.<\/p>\n

\tJohnston says he was thoroughly drunk during the hours he spent playing pai gow and blackjack at the Grand.<\/p>\n

\tGrand spokeswoman Amy Maier said the company does not comment on pending litigation.<\/p>\n

\tThe state Gaming Control Board is investigating.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt\u2019s certainly an extraordinary case. This is not a story that I\u2019ve ever heard before, where someone was blackout intoxicated where they couldn\u2019t read their cards, and yet a casino continued to serve them drinks and issue them more markers,\u201d Lyttle said. \u201cIt\u2019s a very heavy-handed and unusual approach that we haven\u2019t seen in this town in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe Super Bowl was held Feb. 2.<\/p>\n

\tJohnston lives in Ventura and made his fortune with a car dealership.<\/p>\n

\tHe has been a Las Vegas regular for three decades, and says he came to the Grand during Super Bowl weekend at the invitation of the casino. He traveled with his girlfriend, but did most of his gambling alone. He drank in the limousine from the Las Vegas airport to the Grand on that Thursday and drank more during dinner with friends. The suit alleges that the Grand comped him dozens of drinks while he gambled away hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

\tJohnston says he didn\u2019t sober up and learn how much he had lost until Sunday.<\/p>\n

\tNevada gamblers lost nearly $20 million on Super Bowl bets last month.<\/p>\n

It just goes to show that the Downtown Grand doesn’t sweat the action. Drunk or not, this guy played big, and they didn’t sweat the action. I have stayed at the Downtown Grand a few times now and have not witnessed any heat or sweating of the action, whatsoever. They even opened up a high limit area, $25 double deck BJ table on my request.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So he accepts their limo ride with a stocked bar ( free), accepts their room (free), accepts their drinks (free), accepts their line of credit, and now is squealing about having to play back the money? Who took advantage of whom here? Did he think he could get a free dinner and a show and not have to put out at the end of the evening?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To us he is just another idiot gambler. People like him make it possible for people like us (advantage players) to do what we love to do—play the game we love and make some $$$. We can’t count the times we have witnesses drunks losing money hand over fist and signing markers like crazy. Then they wake up the next morning and have not idea how they could have lost so much money. <\/p>\n

\tWhether or not some laws were violated by the casino or not will be up to the Gaming Control Board and\/or the courts. It is so sad to see this happen.<\/p>\n
