\tIn an email blast this weekend, the Republican\u2019s campaign asked potential donors to \u201cparticipate in our pool for the big game with a $5 contribution! After contributing you will be prompted to enter your predictions for a chance to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tAt the bottom of the page \u2014 after places for name, address, credit card info, a big blue contribute button and a recitation of state law requirements for campaign contributions \u2014 is a disclaimer saying you don\u2019t have to contribute to win prizes, such as a bumper sticker, T-shirt or signed flag.<\/p>\n
\tA link takes the user to a page to enter Super Bowl predictions. Just above where you enter your numbers is the statement: \u201cContribute $5 to guess the scores for a chance to win.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tIt seems to be a recurring theme.<\/p>\n
\tSpokesman Matt Hirsch played a straight-faced Humphrey Bogart when asked if voters should be shocked, shocked that a candidate steadfastly against expanded gambling in Texas was using a Super Bowl pool to generate donations.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cI\u2019d just point you to the disclaimer at the bottom of the page that says no contributions required,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\tLegally, it\u2019s not gambling if you don\u2019t have to pay to play. \u201cWe triple-checked with our lawyers on this one,\u201d Hirsch said.<\/p>\n
