East Rutherford, NJ 11\/18\/13 (Robert Sciarrino\/The Star-Ledger)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\tEAST RUTHERFORD \u2014 Total handle wagered at the Meadowlands Racetrack increased by nearly $55 million from 2012 to 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\tWagering rose from $171.9 million in 2012 to $226.8 million in 2013, a 32 percent increase, the racetrack operator announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\tOff-track betting accounted for most of the increase. The live handle stayed mostly flat at $24.6 million, but the track had two fewer racing days in 2013 due to weather cancellations.<\/p>\n<p>\tA new $88 million grandstand opened at the racetrack in November. But most of the racing days in 2013 were in the old grandstand, noted Jason Settlemoir, general manager of the racetrack.<\/p>\n<p>\tAbout 15,000 people attended the opening night of the grandstand, which is one-third the size of the original. The amenities, like a bar and restaurant open seven days a week, are designed to draw a younger crowed not necessarily there to see racing.<\/p>\n<p>\tUnlike venues in other states, the Meadowlands isn&#8217;t allowed to have slot parlors.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe state Assembly gaming committee in December advanced a bill that would create a commission to study the gambling industry and explore whether it should expand to the Meadowlands. Gov.
