After his march across the path,he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t5. <br \/>\n\tHow often are the guards changed?<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGuards <br \/>\n\tare changed every thirty minutes, <br \/>\n\ttwenty-four hours a day, 365 days a <br \/>\n\tyear.<\/p>\n<p>\t6. <br \/>\n\tWhat are the physical traits of the guard <br \/>\n\tlimited to? <\/p>\n<p>\tFor <br \/>\n\ta<\/p>\n<p>\tperson to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he <br \/>\n\tmust be <br \/>\n\tbetween 5&#8242; 10&#8242; and 6&#8242; 2&#8242; tall and <br \/>\n\this waist size cannot exceed 30. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThey <br \/>\n\tmust commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, <br \/>\n\tlive in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot <br \/>\n\tdrink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of <br \/>\n\ttheir lives. They cannot swear in public for the <br \/>\n\trest of their lives and cannot disgrace the <br \/>\n\tuniform or the tomb in any way. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tAfter <br \/>\n\ttwo years, the guard is given a wreath pin that <br \/>\n\tis worn on <br \/>\n\ttheir lapel signifying they <br \/>\n\tserved as guard of the tomb. There are only <br \/>\n\t400 presently worn. The guard must obey <br \/>\n\tthese rules for the rest of their <br \/>\n\tlives or <br \/>\n\tgive up the wreath pin. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe <br \/>\n\tshoes are specially made with very thick soles <br \/>\n\tto keep the heat and cold from their feet. <br \/>\n\tThere are metal heel plates that extend to <br \/>\n\tthe top <br \/>\n\tof the shoe in order to make the loud click as <br \/>\n\tthey come<\/p>\n<p>\tto a halt. <\/p>\n<p>\tThere are no <br \/>\n\twrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards <br \/>\n\tdress for duty <br \/>\n\tin front of a full-length <br \/>\n\tmirror. <\/p>\n<p>\tThe first six months of duty a <br \/>\n\tguard cannot talk to anyone nor <br \/>\n\twatch TV. <br \/>\n\tAll off duty time is spent studying the 175 <br \/>\n\tnotable people laid <br \/>\n\tto rest in <br \/>\n\tArlington National Cemetery .<br \/>\n\tA guard must memorize who they are and where <br \/>\n\tthey are interred. Among the notables are: <\/p>\n<p>\tPresident Taft,<br \/>\n\tJoe Lewis {the boxer}<br \/>\n\tMedal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most <br \/>\n\tdecorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame. <\/p>\n<p>\tEvery guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.. <\/p>\n<p>\tETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.<\/p>\n<p>\tIn <br \/>\n\t2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was <br \/>\n\tapproaching Washington , <br \/>\n\tDC , our <br \/>\n\tUS Senate\/House took 2 days <br \/>\n\toff with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC <br \/>\n\tevening news, it was reported that because of <br \/>\n\tthe dangers from the <br \/>\n\thurricane, the military <br \/>\n\tmembers assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb <br \/>\n\tof <br \/>\n\tthe Unknown Soldier were given permission <br \/>\n\tto suspend the assignment. They <\/p>\n<p>\trespectfully declined the offer, &quot;No way, <br \/>\n\tSir!&quot; Soaked to the skin, <br \/>\n\tmarching in the <br \/>\n\tpelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that <br \/>\n\tguarding <br \/>\n\tthe Tomb was not just an assignment,<\/p>\n<p>\n\tit was the highest honor that can be <br \/>\n\tafforded <br \/>\n\tto a service person.
