Did it work out? Why or why not? Analysis please.
What will you do differently in 2013 in practice or in casino play? New Year’s resolutions if you will. How do you plan on going about making this change?

Please post your answers and challenges here and at the end of 2013 let’s revisit this list to see how we all did. Instructors, please answer as well. You all already know more about dice control than I ever will but we would really be interested in what you continue to work on and the challenges you face individually. I know you all continue to grow and learn and practice so please fill us in on what you are doing and how you go about it.

Here are mine!

In 2012, my main emphasis was on learning to really trust my shot in the casino. I did get better at this by the end of the year but was a mess when 2012 started. Nothing fancy to accomplish this but I did put in greater and more meaningful practice time this year and less actual in casino sessions. Every time I shot a casino session at home I put out piles of chips to shoot between and around. Chips in the casino really bugged me as I would look at them and fret about them instead of looking at my open spot. Guess what? If you look at the chips you will hit the chips! I also had some really good thought provoking tips from teammates that helped me see things in a different light along the way. Thanks teammates for all of your help!

I also worked on a straight backswing as one of my main problems has always been to go inside with my arm. Shortened my backswing and that helped some. I think this is a work in progress as I will always have this tendency and it is worse when I am tired, etc. I’ll keep working at it and won’t practice or play tired.

Now for 2013.

I definitely need to work on more discipline to play this game well in the casino. I need to understand that I am no longer playing this game for entertainment value but to make money. Oh yes, I still want to enjoy my play and time with others but I control my own purse strings and I need to understand that totally. I need to get away from “oh that’s just a $1 bet so what can it hurt.” I have to understand how much all of those $1 bets will cost me over a life time of play. To do this I just need to make a very good betting plan and stick with it in the casino no matter what is happening. I will practice this betting strategy in all of my casino sessions at home until it is ingrained and do nothing else when I get to the casino.

I also need to quit playing with “scared money”. I actually need to resize my bets to a larger amount and quit tip toeing into the game. I either have it or I don’t! I just hate to lose money so I also tend to pull back after a few losses and then I can never recoup my losses. I just need to stay the course or leave the table but no smaller bets on my own shot.

Now it’s your turn. What have you got for me?

Replies:

Posted by: The WoW Man on January 3, 2013, 3:59 pm

Happy New Year,

Thanks for the post Getagrip. This year I will try to pay more attention to the execution of the shot, rather than the result. For me that is easier said than done.
I will practice keeping the palm of my hand parallel to the table top rather than turning it during the throw. It is that slight turn which causes the dice to be off axis. I can focus on the mirror behind the receiving station to help with this, rather than the spot on the table where i want the dice to land. Again, easier said than done. Odd, how out of the blue these flaws pop up.

Catch you later!

Posted by: T-Burg on January 3, 2013, 5:22 pm

Getagrip,
Do you have ESP or something? The points you make in this posts are exactly the issues I have struggled with for quite some time now.
It is actually good for me to see them in print form so that I can examine them visually.

My favorite paragraph is on playing with "scared money". This has always been a huge problem for me since coming to GTC.
At times my shot has lacked consistency and I tend to be cautious. However, there are times when my throw is on and I will continue to
bet conservatively. The phrase "trust you shot" is so so true.

Thanks for the post, it is an enlightening read.

May the dice be with you T-Burg

Posted by: OneMoonCircles on January 4, 2013, 7:29 am

Getagrip and all,

2012 I switched from a 3 finger front to a one finger front in both practice and at the casinos. It did work out, I think because I had more confidence in the toss and myself. Like T-Burg I don’t bet enough on myself when I am on. I am working on this with only some success and need to get more confidence. 2012 I had less double pitch outs. I also used the 5 count much more and that saved me a lot of money. The only specific goal for 2012 was to do better than 2011 using the one finger front and I managed that.

I hope the instructors will chime in. Having taught several other disciplines I know you learn more as an instructor than you ever teach. Some instructors can diagnose themselves rather effectively but many cannot. Instructors don’t usually share what they are working on for themselves other than with other instructors. Many feel it would lessen their integrity among students.

2013. Temper, temper. Sometimes I make Dom look like a Saint. I know I tense up when I get pissed off and it only makes things worse. I must learn how to forgive myself as I am my own worst enemy. I seek perfection in myself and do truly find it once in a while with very nice medium and long rolls. They are not often enough to suit me and I am too hard on myself when they don’t come.

I am a very staunch supporter of "up-a-unit" and take and press after 7 hits on any one point number. This doesn’t happen often for the take and press. I do follow this progression as in Stickman’s tables. When I am in a zone it just goes to follow the progression and I would make more money if I would go to 2 times a unit. I hope to incorporate this in 2013. I do want to play more effectively in 2013 and eliminate the things that mentally are holding me back.

Incidentally, in 2012 I tried to make a softer throw and sometimes I did notice I had a softer throw but it wasn’t that evident until my son, MrE, was at home for a practice session and he mentioned that my throw was as soft as he had seen. I want to continue that in 2013.

In a nut shell, watch my temper, bet more on myself when I am on and continue to develop a soft throw, try to get in the "zone" more often.

Good luck on your quests.

OneMoonCircles

Posted by: Goddess on January 5, 2013, 11:53 am

In practice, I always work on individual components that are giving me trouble, and don’t worry about the results. For me, two things I always need to look at are the position of my hand during the release, and whether I am bringing my arm too far inside. The video analysis identified these two trouble spots for me.

I have a full length mirror at the end of my receiving rig, and thus I can see the position of my hand during release. I worked on this a lot last year, and I believe I have it under control as I had many good rolls.
As far as bringing my arm inside, I occasionally watch only the back swing until I know what it should feel like, and then reurn too actually tossing the dice.

I will continue to follow up on both these problems during practice in the new year, because I know how easy it is to slip back into old habits.
Happy New Year everyone, and hope to see many of you in AC in March – just 3 months away!

Goddess

Posted by: Guest on January 6, 2013, 2:13 am

In 2012 I was working on my arm swing and being a target shooter. My arm swing tended to be a little quick in the backswing and the forward swing. I worked on this using a metronome and I think it has helped. I use a garage sale sticky dot on my recieving station for target practice as well as chips to shoot around. For 2013 my goal is to keep working on the basics as I begin to build strength in my legs. My stroke recovery has most of my attention right now but I am using practice sessions to continue building leg strength.

Happy New Year everyone!
