When I left I was throwing well. However my work schedule hasn’t allowed me ample practice time. I’m trying to get back into a practice routine. But, I find that I’m opening my thumb from my grip on release, instead of the dice releasing through centrifugal force. I’m not spreading my fingers, they are staying tight together and fingertips are even, just opening my thumb from the grip. Is there an exercise I can use to help this. If I think about it, I won’t open my grip. But the idea i believe, is to not think about everything while we are throwing… I have a trip to Vegas on July 11th for a few days. Also, I will be attending the Vegas seminar for a refresher in August as well as a tuneup…. thanks in advance. But wrong practice creates stronger bad habits to overcome. Looking to tweak my throw before my July trip.

Posted by: Dr Crapology on June 18, 2019, 12:00 pm

Rose and Doc catch themselves letting their thumbs not stay in position as you outline. What we do is something that you mentioned–really think about keeping your thumb in position right behind your middle finger as the dice rotate off your front fingers. When this happens we think about it on every throw that we make in practice—after all it is practice where you work on fundamentals. Over time as you think less about it the correct position of the thumb will work it’s way back into your throw.

We like to warm up with taking care to really think about what we are doing in each part of the throw from setting the dice to having the dice gently roll off our fintger tips.

BTW–this won’t be the only thing that will creep back into your throw. Why do you think the golf pros on the PGA tour have swing coaches and the best 300 hitters in baseball have swing coaches to look for problems develop. We are no different.

We will look forward to seeing at the seminar in August and working with your during a tune up. Taking a tune up will give you a few ideas of what to work on during the Refresher course.

Hope that helps.

See you soon.

Rose and Doc

Posted by: The Gridmaker on June 20, 2019, 11:05 pm

Hi Tug,

I found myself doing this too (along with a few other problems) about a month after the class. I ended up buying an inexpensive video camera and watched my practice sessions. You would be surprised how much you catch yourself doing.
I know this may sound like a generic answer , but I also went back to the basics during my practice sessions (using the gripper. reading my class notes, and trying to remember key points each instructor gave us at each station). I know sometimes its hard to get in practice sessions at home, but for me it really was the key.
Hope you get it figured out before your trip.
