MRS DOC
I hope this is not too nit picky. Rose was constantly reminding me at the class to square my shoulders. Here goes:
I am really happy with my whole pre flight routine at the table. Grip, throw, release is all good.
- I focus on the number I want as the stickman passes me the dice, 2/4 six.
- I set the left die 2/4 about 12 inches in front of me in front of my belly button, then the right die 2/4
- Grip, release my middle finger to make sure the thumb is centered.
- I stand up, take deep breath, put my left arm on the chip rack, put my left thumb in my belly button.
- Hold the dice square to back and table top, relax, breath out.
- turn my head and look at the landing zone.
- lock my wrist and elbow, 4-6 inch backswing from the shoulder.
- Slow forward swing, I envision me handing the dice to the stickman instead of throwing them down the table (this vision helps me put less energy into throw.)
- follow through with the hiesman pose.
All of the above is robotic and locked in.
My question, sorry for taking the long way here, the angle of my head when I look down the table. I am usually at around a 45 degree angle. I noticed if I stand a little straighter, maybe a 60 degree angle it really effects my swing.
Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom on this little part of the throw. I learned a long time ago its the last 5% of the details that separates the good from the great. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks and stay safe.

Not really, but what I see missing from your setup is to make sure your shoulders are square to the table. Much more important then your head

Hello there, Rose here,
I have a reply to your question with regard to the angle of your head. At the last class there was a professional bow hunter taking the class. He is also an archery instructor. He and I were talking about the angle of the head when you eye your target. He said that if he was shooting the bow and arrow his head would be totally straight looking at the target and level. Now as I get older I have not been able to get my head totally straight looking at the target although I have practiced some trying this. Shoulders are still squared. I think the more level you have your head the straighter your dice go straight to the target. Try it and see what you think!
Thanks for the post!!

One final point to make in this discussion about posture is that you will keep your eyes on the landing zone until the dice have landed while ignoring everything else that is happening at the table. Your arm will be suspended reaching out out at the point of release. Everyone else at the table will have their eyes trained on your dice at the other end of the table and your eyes will be fixed on the landing zone with your arm still extended. Am I correct in my thinking?

Absolutely!!! Both items you mention are most important. We would also suggest that as the dice gently roll off of your three fingers you hold your grip until you see the dice land on the table. This way you will not be opening your hand–getting a better back spin on the dice.

I have been playing around and I have not noticed any big difference with my head position. It is more of a comfort thing. If I am too straight it feels a little awkward with my throwing motion.
As long as everything stays square and level all is good. Last trip to the casino I had a few really good rolls. Tried not to think too much and just let everything flow. Just made sure my shoulders were square and I was leaning over the rail a little so I get a good straight arm swing. Good grip and a slow steady backswing and good follow through with an arm out ending. Focused on hitting the same landing spot, #3 fire bet, on the far end.
Thanks for all your help and hope to see everyone soon.

@cliffm1, I see it more as a comfort thing as well, but part of that comfort is that I see the end of the table and target zone sort of square. If my head is too angled, it bothers me. I seem to get more focus at a certain angle… but it’s still based on a level of comfort.

The dice rolling off your fingers is a sign you have the correct grip of your fingers. I have not felt that in my practice this season. Will I get back spin with this dice rolling off my fingers? I remember having it before these last twelve months but I forget the connection now.
