Forward swing

Spread the love

So on the swing forward sometimes i swing forward and the dice just die other times i slam the wall. When you guys swing forward in your throws do you feel more of it coming from the arm or do you feel like your moving fowards with your body almost like your reaching for something.

Dotcom, Looking forward to our instructors comments on this. I know for myself personally I let my arm just hang and rely totally on my upper shoulder to do the swing. So much so, my right trapezius muscles are sore being a right hander. I’m still practicing daily and well probably soon start logging the 5k rolls to determine SRR. Keep asking these good questions its not just you that have them.

Both rose and Doc have this problem from time to time. When we throw too hard and the dice bounce too much all over the place (which we both assume is that you are talking about) we simple very consciously slow down our back swing and swing forward slowly reaching out and letting the dice roll off of our finger tips. Remember the dice weight little (an understatement) and you are only throwing the dice a very short distance. So it doesn’t take a lot of effort. Like the idea that you are only using your shoulder joint and not using the elbow, wrist and finger joints. What you describe in your last sentence is that you want to feel like you are reaching for something BUT only using your arm, not your body.

Keep it simple. Come to a class and we bet with a couple of very small adjustments you will be good to go.

Hope to see you soon.

Rose and Doc

Yeah I’m sure that’s what I’m talking about when the dice bounce all over. I will have to work on going at the right speed

I believe you have to adjust the speed of the swing to get the dice approximately at a velocity of (13 feet per second) at this point keep your eye on the target (6 inches from the back-wall) the dice will be in the air approximately .58 sec (Updated forgot the decimal point).

58 seconds? 5.8 seconds? Mr Pip, please clarify. Thanks!

More like 0.58 second at that speed.

I find that when my grip is too tight and I have to open my hand so the dice release that they do not sit down. I believe the arm speed swing must coincide with the tightness of the grip to achieve what you’re talking about. If the Dice do not pull out of your hand they will not sit down properly. In my opinion.

You have stressed this effective technique many times, BMan. And that’s good advice.
I believe that GTC teaches that you need an up-arc of 45 degrees at release
with the attendant height, but I don’t remember them saying why.
So many of us are unaware, but BMan is always there! For us.

See this formula: F = mv2/r
where F is the force pulling the dice out from your fingers,
m is the mass of the dice,
v is the radial velocity of the dice moving in the path of the arc,
r is the radius of the arc.
If you do not produce an arc, but threw with a release in a straight horizontal line,
"r" would be infinitely large and the force "F" would calculate to zero and there
would be no pulling of the dice from your fingers.
So release with that arc and you will get that desired "F" pull BMan wants to see.

What do you think?

I was taught that the arc was to give the dice the proper angle to bounce up striking the pyramids underneath on the flat spot knocking them straight back down. Affording them the best chance to act as one. The angle need to be adjusted according to how far you are landing from the wall to create proper trajectory to strick the underside flat spot of the pyramid.

BMan,
Is that achievable? Maybe once in 500 practice tries? By accident? Even with effort?
My idea of the centrifugal force to pull the dice out of your fingers I would think
would be achievable, with practice, better than 9 out of 10 tries.

Anyone has an opinion on this?

If you can achieve the centrifugal force thing to get the Dice to pull out of your hands nine out of 10 times, you are complete rockstar! The only thing then you need to worry about is is your thumb centered if it is you can play on any table condition anywhere and kick their ass!!!
