1 finger grip question

Spread the love

playing around with the 1 finger grip lately. has anyone else, that has switched from a 3 finger grip, noticed less off-axis 7’s also?
dont have large enough sample size yet but have been able to keep the dice even more in air and staying close to spot where they hit the back wall.

I have settled in on the 1 finger grip after several attempts to make the recommended 3 finger grip work. I think that my fingers may be too big for the 3 finger grip since the outside fingers hang over the edge of the dice. I have not noticed less off-axis 7s, with the 1 finger vs. the 3 finger grip, even though that has never been a serious problem with me with either grip. Off axis 7s are more likely caused by allowing the dice to roll off the finger one to the left and one to the right. The one finger grip seems to be more sensitive to this happening than the 3 finger grip since with the 3 finger grip, there are the other two fingers to constrain it.
What I have realized lately is that I must be very careful with centering the finger and the thumb. Both finger and thumb must put equal surface area and pressure on both die. Also, I have found that it is very important what part of my finger touches the dice. My finger pad is somewhat curved causing the dice to fall off the sides therefore in turn causing the dice to go off axis. The release has to be such that the dice roll off the finger without rotating to the sides. I have to position my finger so that the flattest surface of the pad makes contact with the dice.
I hope this has helped.

Biggest problem with the 1 finger is that you are not making a long enough fulcrum for the dice. You said it yourself – sample size. So many times we have a good run with something but that short run means nothing. Record 2000 tosses with the three finger and the same with the one finger before you think about making a change

Just a thought but my situation may not be your situation. I use the three finger front grip. I find my off axis sevens often come more from pushing through with my thumb upon release rather than anything I am doing with my front fingers. If my thumb is not pushing then I get many more on axis tosses with some of those being sevens of course.

I use the three finger GTC grip and throw. I place the fours on top and the fives facing me. Picking up the dice with the middle finger and thumb while using the index and ring fingers on the sides keeping the dice from splaying. You immediately see the quality of your thumb placement with the spacing of the pips on five dice surrounding your thumb. Bringing your fingers together on the bottom of the die, again the pips on the top fives show just how straight you have your fingers aligned on the bottom.
4/5, 4/5 is a simple dice set, and an easy way to check your grip quality. If you are double pitch 7O. Well, that’s another issue. Good Luck Today, it is a great day to throw. Set44 😀 😀 😀

Michael,
Using the one finger front grip is very different than the 3 finger front. It seems easier but in reality it isn’t because the problems that it creates are different than what you get using 3 fingers, and the results will ultimately be poorer.
My recommendation is learn and practice the 3 finger front grip and don’t cheat yourself by trying to cut corners. This may be a little harder to learn but the difference in the end result will be dramatic in many ways.

Getagrip,

Did you accomplish your 40-roll club using your one-finger grip?

7X7,
No, I have never used the 1 finger front grip except messing around in practice a couple of times. I use the 3 finger front grip.

I was just referring to the thumb issue I have since Michael mentioned he has more off axis 7’s with the three finger grip. Thought that might help him figure out why his dice are going off axis with three fingers. When I push with my thumb I certainly get lots more off axis numbers.

Sorry if my other post was confusing to people. Hope that clears it up! 🙂

I want to know are we all on the same subject ? Do you mean that you use your thumb and one finger to grip the dice then go to a 3 finger grip with out trying a 2 finger grip ?
When I took the class I had been using the 2 finger grip for awhile so when I got to class they only teach the 3 finger grip . It took more then a day to adjust . Also found that I had one nail that was to long and was not letting me get the grip right .
So if you are ready to take your first class you need to know that they only teach the 3 finger grip .
When I use the 3 finger grip it seems to bother my fingers more since I am old and have a problem with stiff fingers .
I think that in practice in the next few months I will try both and see which is better . I have tried both but have not recorded the results . I will try as Dom said with 2,000 rolls and see .
Before I took the class I did not set dice and did have some good rolls just by trying to hit the same spot with the dice . I am working on getting ride of bad habits that I have but it is hard since I have had them for some 45 years . 😀 🙂
Hope that the new Bs can get ride of them sooner .
If you practice before your first class use the 3 finger grip . Hope you enjoy the journey .
Good Rolling. 😀 🙂

That we only teach the 3 finger is not true. We recommend the 3 fingers for all the reasons all ready stated, but because of some physical problem or something else we might try other grips.

I just want to make that clear

I have been using the One Finger Grip from the beginning over 15 years ago. I had a great deal of trouble with the three finger grip and stayed with the One Finger Grip. At least for me, it works well. I often throw in the 30’s, sometimes in the 40’s and 50’s. Would a three finger grip give me better results? That is impossible to say. If I could have had success with the three finger grip, I would have preferred it. I know the three finger grip gives more stability to the dice. I have to constantly be aware of the pressure from my thumb to keep the dice on an even keel. If there is a choice, three finger is by far the best way to go. The One Finger Grip is both easier and harder at the same time. It can be learned and requires lots and lots of practice. For 15 years I have practiced 5-6 days a week. That’s tens of thousands of practice rolls. I remember a former instructor who was very successful using the One Finger Grip. Despite all of the above, three is still the best way to go.

thx for all the input. still using 3 finger during live games, just been playing around with 1 finger while practicing at home also.
