The question has always been why did Stephen Paddock did it. This may have a few answers.

Two days after the tragedy, if I remember correctly, Steve Wynn let the cat out of the bag regarding the casino’s liability. Wynn made the comment that the killer used the service elevator in order to get his cache of weapons up to his room, and only employees have access to the service elevator. I could tell Wynn realized he messed up when he let that slip, and he quickly went to the security they have at his casino. While not culpable, Mandalay Bay is definitely liable.
As to motive, the investigation ignored the obvious. This man cased earlier events over several months. The only thing different about this event was that it was full of patriotic conservatives happy with their life. Sure, the despicable guy lost money, but it wasn’t like he was a man with a loving family facing financial disaster. This guy had no one that would care about that.
And there is your answer. This was a morally bankrupt guy that decided he was cheated out of having a happy, fulfilling life he thought he deserved. Lavishing gifts on his girlfriend didn’t turn out like he expected. Respect from doing well in business didn’t last as he expected. Having a lot of money didn’t give him the fulfillment he expected. He did all that the world anywhere promises would get you love, respect, and admiration. Instead, he felt empty, miserable, and angry at the world.
He looked around until he found an event that fed his anger – he settled on a large group of ordinary people that had the happiness, joy, and satisfaction he felt he deserved but was cheated. That’s how evil works. It’s not complicated.
Why don’t the rest of us end up that way, why don’t the rest of us do our best to make everyone else feel worse than he felt? I can only speak for myself. I love my wife, children, and grandchildren, and make an effort to often show them that I do. I go to church regularly and do my part, pray every morning. I got involved in politics (yuck) to do my best to get good people elected, people that want to serve, not rule (And, yes, Donald Trump is good people. Say what you want, but he’s good at what he’s doing, he’s doing his best to serve his country – us, and all his ex-wives have only good things to say about him – double wow.)
And I continue to meet and make new friends with more like minded, good people – like our GTC friends.
