We are fine

Spread the love

This might not be the right place on the GTC web site, but since Rose and Doc live in Texas, we thought we would respond. We have received several emails/phone calls from our GTC family asking if we are OK. We appreciate the concern.

The answer is yes we are doing fine. We are in Austin which was north and west of Harvey. We were on the outer edges of the hurricane and received a little heavy rain (which was very much needed as we had over 6 to 7 weeks of no rain) and some heavy wind. There was some flooding just east about 75 miles away. We were very fortunate. We are also several hundred miles from the coast.

Please keep in mind those people who bore the brunt of Harvey in South East Texas–Houston, Beaumont, Corpus Christi Rockport to name a few towns. They will certainly have a very hard time recovering from the disaster.

I know we have some GTC members who lived in the hardest hit areas and we send our thoughts and prayers to them hope they get back to a normal life soon.

Rose and Doc

PS–did have some correspondence with No Field Five and he is doing fine. Hope to hear how other GTC members got through the ordeal.

By the grace of God we were came out of this completely unscathed. After much thought, we decided to stay at our house on Galveston Bay since it didn’t appear that the storm surge would be too much if the storm made landfall around Corpus. The surge never made it to the slab underneath our house. We received as much rain as everyone else, but here, it just runs off into the bay.

As this thing unfolded, I then became worried about my office which sits between the spillways of the Addicks dam and the Barker dam. So far, the building is in no danger, access is not a problem and we are operating out of it as of last Thursday.

Unfortunately, many of our friends and family have lost everything. When you buy a house where I live, you are aware of the risk of ruin; but these poor people had no idea that they had this kind of exposure. When I lived in Katy behind the Barker dam, I never fathomed that water would backfill that far west.

I am pleased to hear that you and Janis were spared and are safe. There’s going to be some rough times during the coming weeks, but I am forever grateful that the loss of life was not much worse than it could have been.

My house is in the flood area, just 2 miles north of the streets they were showing on Fox News in The Woodlands. My subdivision is up hill from the old "Chateau Woods" that floods every few years. I was in Louisiana 2 days before the hurricane land fall, at an Indian casino with zero cell phone coverage – decided I don’t care for Indian casinos. I then went to Shreveport and called home. My wife, RTR4Ever said 2 streets down, the water was 3". I told her to pack and join me in Shreveport. She and my 15 year old daughter, who didn’t want to leave, sent me a video of the road getting out of there – almost car bumper high. My youngest son, Jesse, 28, decided to stay, and our dog, Haley, stayed (hey, she can swim). My son, ex-Army, partnered with the neighbor men to keep an eye on things. Yes, we have guns, like everybody I know in Texas. All of our preachers carry. Even in church.

I checked with Jesse every day. I put in a whole house standby generator 3 years ago on a raised concrete foundation, so I knew there would be power up to 2 feet of flooding. Thank the Lord, our house did not flood high enough to enter the home. Behind us, though, everyone flooded. Boats and helicopters were coming and going to retrieve those that were stranded.

We came back last Wednesday, when the interstate off ramps were open, finally. My church is just a mile away (BTW, I’m a layman – don’t have the bed side manner to be a pastor), and we served as a collection point for getting supplies and help to the area. I’m proud of how our members pitched in. It’s hot, sweaty work. Church was well attended, Sunday, even though half the church was taken by supplies ready to go out, which they did, following a short service. There were churches all over the country that sent trucks with supplies. Is there anywhere like the USA? I hope so.

Jesse works at a local dealership, and said flooded cars were flowing in, to be repaired or, for most, totaled.

Mail and trash service are running again, so we’re getting back to normal.

I really appreciated on the news seeing some local monster trucks pull some National Guard trucks out of flood water and mud. Now that’s Texas.

All is well

I’m happy to hear you and the family are doing OK. Some of the churches in my area of Florida have been sending trucks with supplies.
God Bless Texas and God Bless the USA.

Stay safe!

Wowman, just hope that Irma will not cause Florida much damage. Will be following this Hurricare on the TV.

Just want to throw this out as it is probably NOT something that will be reported anywhere in the USA news.

Thirty three Red Cross and medical personnel and several truck loads of supplies from here near Guadalajara Mexico are in Texas helping the flood victims there. I am sure other countries are probably helping as well. It won’t change the world but I am happy when other countries give back to the USA with whatever help they can give.

Hope all will be safe soon and on the way to recovery.

This is one of the official government weather sites and even lets you see probabilities for different cities in Florida.

Hard to believe this one may be worse than Harvey. Pray

Doc

Glad to hear you made it through this ok as well as the others you know.

It is hard being here in the northwoods to understand what that must be like.
