That was a great video. I was in Washington, DC, for July 4, visiting with 2 of my sons. Myself and my 5 sons are all veterans, Navy and Army. While sitting in traffic over the Potomac River, I got a call from the chairman of the board of my local Tea Party (Montgomery County, Texas). He said he watched the 4th of July celebration in Wash, DC, on TV, and thought about my sons and I. He wanted to let me know how much he appreciated the service my sons and I have given to our country, and wanted me to pass on his gratitude to my sons. I was surprised but very appreciative for his call.

Unlike my father’s generation which required a 100% involvement in a world war, only 7.3% of Americans living today have served in our military. I’m not for a draft and I don’t think less of those who never served. Most are not suited for it, and that’s not a bad thing. I have no doubt that Americans as a whole would answer the call if circumstances required it.

Today’s military receives a minimum of 18 months of combat training before facing our enemies, is well equipped and supported. True, our previous President had absurd rules of engagement, which almost cost my 3rd son his life in Afghanistan – a story for another time. But, I thank the Lord, those days are over. Our combat personnel now get all the artillery, heavy equipment, and air support they need.

I and my sons prefer a highly trained and equipped military. Gratitude is appreciated, but not necessary. Just do your part to make our country great. After all, we’re Americans. Enough said.
