Dice Musings on a Cloudy Sunday Morning

Spread the love

Since there hasn’t been much activity here lately maybe no one will care if I am somewhat frivilous here this morning.

I have been reading about the data chips the NFL will test in footballs this year. Hmmm, got me to thinking about how I would like data chips in my practice dice. Yes, please!! My computer now tells me arm velocity, number of rotations, where they hit on the table, straight to wall, velocity when hitting the back wall, etc, etc. I like!!! More data—YES! (Where is One Moon Circle?)

Let’s keep this from the casinos though as I don’t want any data chips in THEIR dice. They don’t need to know my amount of influence.

So, Dom, can you get right on this for us? 😛 😀 😀

The casinos already have RFID technology in their gaming chips. A paranoid individual could suspect they are using that technology for a lot more than just counting, tracking, authentication, inventory and security purposes. 👿 👿 👿

Finisher,

A new grandson!! Well, that beats any hand that could be tossed in the casino! Enjoy your time with your family.

Grand sons are a real deal. Rose and I reared two girls and then one daughter had a little girl—we could not have been happier. Then the same daughter screwed up and what do you know—a grandson. I love both equally but the new male in the family has been an eye opener. He is now 13 and to say he is competitive and into to everything would be an understatement. So much fun.

Beats the heck out of a trip to the casino any time.

The only bad part is that it is a 20 flight .
Good Rolling.

Dice with chips inside, what a training tool! Imagine accelerometers and g-force measurements plus rotational information. Almost instant feedback on the effects of a minor grip change, or the force of impact with a slightly higher or lower arc. Just how hard am I hitting the back wall?

Of course the real challenge would be maintaining the proper balance so that the dice weren’t "loaded".

Being an engineer by trade the idea of a chip in the dice may be feasible but the added weight even if balanced would probably be hard to compensate for. An idea I thought about a little was a pair of dice with a small flake of foil attached to each side, a group of small lasers etc but then again weight is a consideration and all it really becomes is a fancy video. Taking an Elite video class is cheaper and easier. One thing I do is video record my practice time. I can see where I am landing, how hard I’m hitting the back wall and what kind of rotation I’m getting. Actually since taking the advanced class and a few video classes I can tell a lot about my shot by watching how the dice react when they hit the layout. The use of technology is a fun thing to contemplate but in the end knowing why the dice do what they do can be a very effective learning tool.
