Craps

A couple of practice ideas

Spread the love

While getting ready for the AC class Rose and Doc came up with a couple of practice routines that might help others and wanted to share.

1) We call this "learning how to really focus."

It does take two people to do this but we think that it works. Another GTC player is great but any person who likes to fling the dice down the table will work. Each of you will take turns throwing the dice. Each person will play his /her own game. You will buy in just like in a casino. You can use a craps table or your practice set up, but you will need chips. Each player will not bet on the other player.

Player number one will roll the dice (and one time only) and make his/her usual bets. Then it will be player number two’s turn to roll one time. Continue to roll one time then it will be time for the other player to take his/her one roll. Continue this routine (volleying back and forth). You want to break up your routine so that you have to re-focus. Each player will make his/her own bets and collect his/her pay days. You will continue to alternate every other roll. The player not rolling will stick or retrieve the dice after each roll. By doing this routine you will get out of your "zone" and you must re-focus. Excellent practice for those times when there is an argument at the table, it takes a long time for the dealers to make pay offs and other disruptions at the table. You must re-focus before each roll of the dice. AND it can be fun to see who wins the most money—the loser has to buy the winner a beer—-or in our case the winner gets a kiss and a hug. Is Doc lucky or not?????

2) Use your usual routine of practice—that is setting the dice, working on your grip and throw, but you really don’t use chips for pay offs. You do this routine by yourself. After you set your point, mark it with an on/off button or other object. Place a $1 chip in the come area. When you hit a box number place the $1 chip on that number. Place another $1 chip in the come area until you have three numbers covered through the come line–assuming you are come betting (Place betting works also). As you roll, play just like you are in the casino. If you hit a pay day, don’t worry about the pay off, but simply use the $1 chip to mark whether you have a $1 chip in the come line, or a come bet on a box number or if place betting a $1 chip on the selected box number. Move the $1 chips just like a dealer would in the casino.

Using this method you don’t worry about how much you won on each pay day, do your press, etc. You work on the basics of the set, grip and throw as learned in class. We count the number of rolls and wins. When we seven out we take the $1 chips off the table and start over.

Hope these will help. They have helped Rose and Doc. If you have any questions, let us know.

Hope to see everyone in about a week in AC.

Rose and Doc

You have me thinking about my practice sessions now .
They go like this .
No worm up .
I set the dice . Breath and throw .
I write down each die rolled .
Make pay off if any .
Take stick to get dice back .
Get stick out of way then throw again .
I find that up a unite is the easy way to bet till I get passed 5 unites .So then I will take the win and press instead to help with the math pay out thing .
Since I am a low bet person that is how I find it to be easy .
It can be hard on BR if have some short rolls one after another .
So it seems that I get out of focus just about all the time and did not realize it .
So how do others practice ?
Good Rolling. 🙂 🙂

I don’t believe I have ever witnessed Mrs. Rose lose, so what would she get.
Sounds like the two of you still have a SPICY practice routine, after 50 years.

ChanceC and I have tried a couple of practice routines somewhat similar to yours.
We have the SBC Shoe practice.
We throw the hardway until we establish a 6,8,4, or 10 point. We then change to 2v or 3v accordingly. We keep up with bets, points and numbers. Trying to make Firebet also keeping up with all.tall, and small
numbers.

Then we have the most exciting practice. Its called the NICKATNIGHT ,I’M GOING TO THROW 3 TIMES AND GO TO BED.
I believe most people know Nickatnight and ChanceC love to play close to the big fountains in Vegas. I have witnessed each of them have great throws at other casinos, but when they are at playing by the fountains, their confidence is unbelievable.
Back to the game.
We take 3 turns each with 2 times our normal bets. We use the 2v, press the 1st time on 4 and 10. So far we are ahead of this game, and when the money gets big, I try to put as much pressure on Chance as I can to get him ready to shoot the next time we get to Vegas and try this.

This all sounds good to me.

Great practice ideas! This past summer in Vegas Mr. Finesse commented that my grip needed "work". Soon after arriving home my new 12′ table that I purchased through GTC arrived. Since then I have made many changes to my practice routine. I used to just throw and record rolls for 30 min or so maybe once or twice a day. Many times less often. Now I practice at the table a few times a day for 10-15 min. My routine is very consistent at present. I have a wooden dice boat with six pairs of dice. I place a pair in the area the stick would probably deliver them to. I then take a step back from the table. As I step back up to the table I say to myself "dice are out". I check my stance, shoulder alignment and left arm position, set the dice, fours on top sixes away with sixes pips vertical and position them in the spot I want to pick them up in. I take my grip. Then check it to see that it’s’ correct. I put the dice down and take a step back. I repeat this over and over till I can take my grip without having to make any corrections three times in a row. When I start throwing I change the set to a hard-ways usually threes on top fives facing me. I use $1 chips to mark my box numbers hit. Sometimes I record using smart craps and check my box number distribution that way. I have to stop and collect the dice every six throws which encourages me to stay with my pre-shot routine and gives me a chance to practice refocusing. having dice out there also gives me a chance to practice my target control. M 2c since we are sharing;)

Thank you to everyone for the practice ideas….
Doc: I have been doing the single chip method after a few rounds of practice simulating the action at casino tables. I like the change of pace and sometimes gives me some renewed energy to continue working on the throw & technique. I usually end each practice session with the small bowl as target… moving around to different locations, I found that really helped the last time in Vegas in working around chips in my usual landing area.
