Just had to do a review of this book. One of the best I have read in a long time. Very well researched and written and an interesting subject matter.
This book is about the eight man crew from the University of Washington who won an Olympic gold metal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Also about the coaches, other crews and the boat builder which I found most interesting of all.
Interesting back story on each of the boys in the boat and lots of info also on the life and times in 1936 such as the depression, dust bowls, and German aggression prior to WW2.
I did work for the University of Washington for many years so I was aware of the crew Olympic win and I was familiar with many of the places they talked about in and around the University. I have even seen the shell that the crew used for their win. That being said I didn’t know a thing about the sport of Crew or the boats they use or the psychology of racing. I found all of that fascinating and very well written so easy to understand. Also, has many black and white pictures to go along with the text.
Take the time to read this book. If you like books like "Seabiscuit" that are inspirational then you will like this one. Informative, competitive, and very inspirational! I don’t think you will regret the read! Enjoy!
