Put Bet?

Spread the love

I know that one take is NO PUT BETS due to losing the power of the seven, but say I’m early in working the Big Skinny and
– I’ve hit a number but it’s now down as I’m ready to progress to another come bet
– I’ve hit this number twice by rolling it 4 times already
– the point is another number rolled once and I have 1 other come bet up also rolled only once
– my adjusted Big Skinny is 2 hits then go to 3 come, 2 more hits then got to 4 and progress every hit going forward

Could it be beneficial to put the number instead of a come bet since it’s a solid number for me on this hand? (Dom) I’m practicing and playing as promised with 100% come bets, but in my practice sessions and once in real play, I’ve been in this position and thought that it would be an advantage bet IN THAT HAND ONLY(not based on a previous hand).

Thoughts and arguments?

Just speaking from memory without exact numbers in mind, as best I can recall a put bet can be a good idea if you have at least 5 times odd or more–10 times odds would be even better. The more odds you have the lower the HA.

Also suppose the number you have been hitting is a 6 or 8, I would go up and place when the come bet on those numbers comes down because you do not have a bet in the come area. The House Advantage (HA) on placing the 6 an 8 is 1.5% vrs 1.4% for a come bet. About the same and certainly can be beat in the long run with your skill.

Buying the 4 and 10 for $25 (or more if allowed) with a $1 vig that is paid on wins only, would also be a good alternative. The 4% vig on the 4 and 9 place bet is too high, so I would avoid placing those two numbers

Put betting is a very personal decision. Hope the above will give you some idea as how you might want to attack this situation.

More importantly, I hope others will add to this discussion. Excellent question and thank you for posting.

Doc

PS–Rose and I are both come betters and use The Big Skinny (TBS) exclusively with a little modification—we like to place the 6 and 8 on ourselves as we do hit a lot of 6’s and 8’s using the hard way set–not always but enough to make this a profitable move for us.

Given the scenario you have described it is proper to be up on the number that just came down. The question to be answered is whether it should be a put bet vs. a place or buy bet.

The simple answer is to determine which one would pay you more. If they pay the same do the place or buy bet rather than a put bet because with the put bet your base bet is at risk on a future come out roll. If you roll a seven on a future come out you lose your base bet. Whereas a place or buy bet would not be affected by a come out seven.

For example, if you do a put bet of $5 with $50 in odds (10X) on the 4 or 10, it would pay $105. But a buy bet of $55 on the 4 or 10 would pay $110 less a $2 vig for $108. So make a buy bet instead of the put bet in that situation.

Yep, Gotcha Doc and Skinny. Need to be able to do that math quickly and assess the situation and just make the right bet.

Now, would that be considered cheating on my promise to Dom of playing 100% Come game? 😀 I suppose if I put the Come back up and goes to that number the buy/place comes back down so I’ll say no, it’s not cheating!

Do the math at home based on the odds you are going to take and what the casino that you play at allows. Figure it out for the different numbers and that way you don’t have to work out the math at the tables. You always want to have your betting down so that it is automatic requiring one less thing to think about at the tables.

But in general you will find that unless you can get 10X odds or better the place or buy bet is generally better than the put bet.

As for a buy or place bet instead of a come bet, there is a point in the big skinny where I recommend adding a place bet to your come bet so that you collect on both in future hits. Granted that is after you have made enough profit to justify the additional money on the table.

But in the scenario you described you had rolled a specific number 4 times early on in the roll. It makes sense to be up on that number with a place or buy bet as soon as it came down during the come out roll. Then if a pass or come bet goes to that number you can decide if you want to take the place/buy bet down or leave it there to double park that number depending on how much of a profit you have in your rails. If I am rolling a specific number early in a roll, I want to be sure I am always on that number in this roll.
