    The hole in one that almost was not

    I got my first hole in one on 10/3/14. I used a ping 6 iron and a titleist velocity ball on the 140 yard hole par 3.

    Following is what I wrote on Team Titleist >> Blog >> Hole in One Stories.

    The pin was towards the back of the green and our lead off player, Lou, landed on the green in line with the hole. I joked with him that he should mark his ball and we all laughed. Then I proceeded to hit my ball on the green and it tracked towards the hole. It seemed to disappear as it neared the flag and we all thought it went in the hole.

    When we approached the green, Lou got there first and said he saw the ball. He was still a distance away but it seemed to be hanging on the lip when all of a sudden he saw it drop into the hole!

    Lou was the only one to see it because the rest of us were too far away yet. We figured the ball went around the back of the hole and we could not see it from the tee. But it must have been on the edge of the hole and just fallen in. It was ironic since I had jokingly told Lou to mark his ball and he is the one who saw the ball drop in the hole.

    As we say in my group–a hole in one is all skill—no luck is involved. Congrats. I assume you bought the drinks aftervthe round of golf!!!

    According to mathematicians and actuaries the odds of a hole-in-one by an amateur golfer is 12,500 to 1. I am pretty sure I have not played anywhere near that number of par 3’s in my life. In fact I even had a hole-in-one once on a 98 yard par 3 on an executive course when I was a just a teenager. I also had an eagle on a par 4 hole about 7 years ago. I was 150 yards from the hole and put it in with a 5 iron. I consider that to be similar to a hole-in-one. That was definitely luck because I was still relatively new to the game then. So I think I have beaten the odds in golf.

    In bowling the math is 11,500 to 1 against bowling a 300 game. When I shot my 300 game a few years ago there is a good chance I had bowled that many games in my life up to that point. So I may be even with the numbers in bowling 🙄

    The weird thing is I am a much better bowler than I am a golfer. So, I can not justify my results with the odds.
