Dice Pilot's ideas works

Spread the love

Was having some problem with the dice frequently going to the left as they hit the table. Rose was not available to see what I was doing wrong. Had to take care of this one myself. I knew it had something to do with my release as the dice were not level and hitting on the corner sending them sideways. Old Doc decided to get out the 24 by 36 inch mirror, place the mirror against the back wall and watch my throw. In just 2 throws I noticed that as I held my release my 1st finger was coming up short at release. Not a problem with the grip as I checked it out real carefully before throwing. I simply wasn’t keeping my fingers together at release.

Here is where DP’s idea came into play. I took two small pieces of flat toothpicks–a very small piece of thin card board will do–and placed them between my fingers. Made myself hold them in place through out the throw and the dice landed perfectly. Did this 10 times to get the feel and them started to throw without the toothpicks. Dice looking good now. Then I got out the chips and begin "keeping score" and counting the throws. The first was a nice profitable 16 and then followed with a good money maker of 34. This GTC stuff works, but like the pros on the PGA tour they have to practice and get advice from instructors–and self critique on the course. We are no different.

Self critique is most important for each of us as is getting help from other GTC players and of course taking the lessons offered during a GTC weekend. Just want to share with others on this site. Hope it will help.

Amazing that you are able to correct that yourself so quickly. You are amazing. Glad you were able to solve the problem and I look forward to seeing you guys in a few weeks.

Midnight, guess I was lucky this time. Usually Rose or one of the instructors is able to spot what I am doing wrong. Don’t think I could have done it without the mirror. Rose and I look forward to seeing you as well.

I am glad that little trick worked on correcting your throw. It came to me during the classes watching each student’s fingers
splay open after the dice release. It sure works in forcing your brain to think about keeping those sticks in place.

Just thought I would bring back for new rollers .

It’s a great one that has now helped me twice. I think some of these should be recycled automagically every few months to knock people like me upside the head once in a while! 😉

I bring back old post when they are brought up and there may be some questions . Just to inform in players that may not have gone back and read old posts . When I first got on this site I went back and read ALL old posts so would not ask some doom question that has been talked about .
It did take some time but I did get a lot of information that way .I now try to keep up with at least the craps posts .
I also look at how many view the posts which are more then post in them .
There are a lot of lurkers out there . I wish more would post .
DP was one instructor that noticed when I was taking class that I had one finger nail that was way to long and was not letting me get right grip .It was on second day of class .
Some times it is just a little thing that is missed by many . That is why the class is so good . You have lots of eyes looking for those little things .
Hope you have great rolls on your trip I will be in Vegas on the 13 and 14 .
Good Rolling. 🙂 🙂

I went back to the old post, but the pictures referenced in the post are apparently no longer available. I don’t think I really need the pix, but my question is: "Are the toothpicks between the knuckles next to your fingernails or between the ones just above those? I’m guessing the toothpicks need to go up a little to the middle of the ‘C’ shape.

Opening my hand before the dice come out is one of my great sins and like any sin, it keeps trying to reestablish itself. Got to keep the weeds out of the garden. I’ve used dimes also, and they work too. It is a thin line between too snug a grip and one that tends to let go prematurely.

A very useful practice pointer, all things considered.

You want to feel the dice rolling off your fingers. If you open your hand you will not feel that. Once you get that feel, it is easier to replicate it and keep your hand closed. Make sure you are using reasonably new dice with sharp edges. That also makes it easier to feel them roll off the tips of the fingers.

Since I throw with a one-finger front when the dice are felt rolling off I have less control and it quickly becomes random. More pressure must be applied to
maintain any control. This pressure is quite light and only slightly more than with the 3 finger front. You must also open the "C" just a little. I believe this is necessary as you have no pressure on the outside of the dice. Dice Pilot’s "trick" does not work on the one finger front.

OMC So are you saying that you use your thumb and one finger to throw with ? Like the ice grip ?
Good Rolling. 🙂 🙂

You guys aren’t going to believe this, but I realized that I was again probably opening my fingers at the apex of the throw and started practicing a few tosses with small slips of paper between my fingers (half inch square maybe). The first few times, one of them came out and floated through the air as the dice left. I tightened things up a bit for a number of throws and got some new muscle memory going. Gluing those fingers together through release has made dramatic changes. In fact in practice on Saturday, I rolled an 85. That is a personal best for me. Wish it would have happened in real combat with the casinos, but that kind of a roll shows that it ‘can’ happen. Would have cashed out with a profit of almost $5000!

Once again, a tip from this site is more than just useful.

Yes Finisher,

Middle finger and thumb. Not on the sides. Looks like a regular toss only using just the two fingers. This grip presents it’s own problems. I am getting increasingly more arthritis in the middle finger but since it stays straight no pain when throwing. Played last night lost $3. Had fun though.
