Hello all GTCers, I have a request that I am not sure can be answered. Here it is— once the dice go past eyes they are in the second half of a swing. If one knows they are level in the backswing – since you can watch that if one wants to– once the dice come back to under your eyes you are now on the forward swing. How can one be sure they are still level on the start of the forward swing since one can not watch that they are level and watch a spot to throw to at the same time. So my question is, Is there a drill or a way to know visaully i.e. relative to a line one the table or whatever that the dice are level once past your eyes and starting the forward swing. Once they land it is easy to tell for they will move left or right but how can one insure they are level throughout the swing. Once your arm is out in front of you there is not much you can do so my guess the answer is in the small time between when the dice get to your eyes again (from backswing) to about a foot (I am guessing)in front of you on the forward swing. The rest of the swing will just follow if that beginning part is level (I am also guessing). So is there a way- a drill- to insure the dice are level in that one foot crucial area in front of you that you can not see since you are watching a spot. Professor

Do you watch your dice in your back swing then moving your eyes to the landing area as the dice move forward?

The drill would be to break it down into segments and focus on them one at a time. If you want to be sure your backs wing is proper, then only look at the back swing with your eyes. Do not look at the target. Let muscle memory handle that part of the swing. Once you are certain the back swing is proper, then focus your eyes on that section of the forward swing you do not see when you are looking at your target. Once again, do not look at the target.

When you are confident you have those parts of the swing working properly go back to focusing solely on the target. At this point you should be able to "feel" when you are doing it right and when you are doing it differently.

Also be sure to keep the thought of the railroad tracks in your mind as you do your swing. Keep the dice inside the tracks on the back and forward swing mentally. You are looking at a target that is close to the back wall so you can see the back wall. You want your fingers to end up parallel to the wall at release. Keep those images in your mind as well, hand parallel in between the tracks, hand and fingers square to the back wall at release.

Doing this for some of your practice should help to build it into your muscle memory and you should not need the mental gymnastics later unless things start to waver in the future.

thank you Skinny and brothelman for such quick responses. Yes i do look at the dice on the way back to see if they are level and I have been doing that now for a month or so. And Skinny I have also watched the forward swing for the same amount of time to see if they are level. I have been tring to create a muscle memory with both sides of the swing. I guess through some physic connection I just set up two parallel rails (railroad tracks)for me to follow as you just suggested before I read your response—eerie. I think I have establihed a muscle memory with the backswing part but not yet with the forward swing. I am hoping that the track I have set up will push that along. I will check to make sure my hand is parallel with the back wall. I think that may be what I am looking for to help the dice sit faster. Thanks again guys.

Professor–here is an idea. Purchase an inexpensive mirror (just a coupld ov dollars) at Target or Home Depot to use in practice from time to time–we use one 2 feet by 3 feet. Place the mirror inside the end of your craps table or landing station. If the latter and since you probably have the landing station against the wall, you can place the bottom of the mirror in the landing station and leaning against the wall. Adjust the mirror so that you can watch your swing from set up to back swing to forward swing to release. You can easily see every part of your swing. Your arm will not be in the way. Remember for the purposes of this drill, you look at your arm and body all the way to the finish including holding your arm and fingers for a few counts after the dice roll out of your fingers. Don’t even look at your target, you are looking as your entire swing. You will see all kinds of things—the good, the bad and the ugly. Now you have something to work on and improve. Self critique is imperative.

As Skinny said you can concentrate on one part of your swing at a time—ie set up, back swing, and after a several throws the forward swing, and lastly the release. You can also see if your dice are level during your grip and set up routine. You can really see a lot. AND remember when the dice hit the mirror (after they bounce on the table first of course) the mirror will not break.

skinny is the man I was worried that you where moving you eyes witch would cause you to be moving your body which would cause everything to move.

My drill , take a 2by6 3 feet long glue dowls to the edge of it at both ends and sides thus creating a path for your arm to swing through, put the 2by6 on your table right where you make your shot from this will make the rail road tracks that skinny is taking about and will let you know if you arm is staying straight.

The arm must be straight or nothing else will be!
