Craps

A fundamental question

Spread the love

I need a bit of help to make sure I didn’t miss something at the Memphis Primer course. I am pretty sure I was taught to set the dice, pick them up and then kind of flex my wrist so that my 3 fingers were under the dice and my thumb on top. Square the dice with the table and then do my pendulum swing. I just re-read Casino Craps Shoot to Win and watched the DVD. I am pretty sure Dom set the dice, used the 3 Finger Grip and picked them straight up so that his 3 Fingers were on the side of the dice facing the back wall and his thumb on the side facing the near wall. In other words, straight off the table with no bend or flex in the wrist. Also on his swing in the video, he had a slight bend at the elbow on the backswing (his arm flexed just a bit) and I have been trying to keep my arm pretty straight.

I tried this for about 100 rolls and even though it feels more awkward because I am not used to it, my throws were better. Did I miss something or has the instruction changed just a bit since that book and DVD were released?

The way you explained what you were taught is correct. You have to remember that each individual is different and they will eventually develop their own routine to go from grip to release. Your a newbie, concentrate on the fundamentals as you were presented them and not how someone else approaches them. As far as Dom’s methodology is concerned, your watching a master at work,it’s perfect for him and him alone. Mr. Finesse has a unique methodology and it’s perfect for him, mine is different from the several guys here in Colorado and their’s is different from mine and each others.

Concentrate on your approach, grip and release. Log tens of thousands of throws, get consistent. Consistency is the name of this game not craps. I want the same routine, dice set, grip, pickup, arm swing, release and target to drop the dice onto every throw. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency in MY game.

Stephen said it right. What we say is that we are teaching you the Ted Williams style of throwing at the Primer seminar. The key is to make sure that the dice are perfectly square. Please try to do it the way you were taught in Memphis. 100 throws with my style is just not enough of a test. Remember any squirrel can find an acorn every now and then :)))

You want to be comfortable at the tables when you grip and throw. As you progress and possibly take a refresher, your grip might change, and then it might not. When a kid learns to hit a ball, he or she has to start with the basics. That is what we gave you. This is a continuing education

Thanks Dom and Stephen,

I’ll keep on keeping on with the way I was taught. Just wasn’t sure if I missed something. I seem to be able to keep the dice together better when gripping and throwing like on the DVD but I have only recorded 1000 throws so I know I have a long way to go.

Thanks for your input. See you in Vegas in October for a Refresher.

Jaw Bones,

Doc and Rose look forward to seeing you in Vegas in October. Just keep doing what we taught you in Memphis. Rose and Doc have been at this for 8 years. We have tried some variations but always come back to Dom’s "The Ted Williams Style." It is our opinion that it is the best–for us as least. Also we always use the hardway set. We are successful.

Keep pulling those teeth.

See you soon.

Stick with the basics and log your numbers. If you decide to tweak you grip or throw do it for a long enough period to be able to do a statistical analysis on the logged numbers. My biggest fault has been my grip and fumbling with it. I recently decided that due to having small fingers that maybe I should used more pads then limited edges and started to track the numbers. Initial data seems to show better control but I am going to stick with it until I have a large data set to analyze. It’s all about practice, lots of practice and logging the numbers.

Thanks Doc and Breeze. I have only logged 1000 throws so far so I have a long way to go.

Doc, looking forward to seeing you again. This time my bride of 34 years will be with me taking the Primer course. She is pretty new to this game we love but so far she has taken to it like a duck to water. Can’t wait until we become a "Doc and Rose" team.

We have several good husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend teams in GTC.

The Goddess/Sandtrap and Cobe/Kathy are two that come to mind.
