What are a few good practice exercises to improve my toss

Spread the love

I toss dice into a bowl with padding at the bottom a lot. I use a mirror to watch my arm on follow through motion. I was thinking of using foil to see how flat my dice hit. I have been using a video camera to see my changes in stance or arm movement. My daughter bought me a device which is suppost to video the dice in slow motion. We’ll see how good it really is tomorrow. She bought this device for my birthday this past 02/24. 😎

Eagle Eye, We like all of the items you mentioned. Rose and Doc use them all the time. The foil on the table landing area will let you see if the dice are landing flat, on edge or on a corner. You can also take a small tray (we have used a small cookie sheet about 6" by 10", with fine sand in it and let the dice land in the sand–thanks Dice Pilot for this idea. It too will make an imprint to see if the dice are landing flat, on edge or on a corner. The only problem we have with this item is the fact that with most of the landings a little sand may be knocked out of the tray and you have to vacuum the area. You can even spray a little water on the top layer of sand so the imprint will stay in place. We usually smooth out the sand after each throw.

The last item would be to find someone who can watch and assist you in critiquing your throw–there are GTC students all over the country, hopefully one near you. You can post on the board for someone in your area. Rose and Doc are lucky in that we practice together several times a week. It is amazing how little things can creep into your throw that you never see. With this in mind never lose sight of the ability of being able to self critique.

Lastly after you use these techniques from time to time, never lose sight of taking a refresher course, advanced course, elite video or a tune up. We like to use the analogy of pro golfers—these guys and gals are the best at their sport and they are taking lessons all the time–they spend a lot of money on the professional help. Dice control is no different.

Hope that will help.

PS—let us know how the "slow motion" tool works out. You might be able to post the results and let us know the brand as it might help others. Hope to see you soon in the casinos soon.

Thanks You Rose and Doc. Doc, the sand thing sounds like a good idea. Thanks

Carbon paper I think works better than foil.

Carbon Paper sounds good. Dr. I don’t know of any fellow GTCers in my area. I have been hitting higher numbers at practice due to dice hitting flat and not on the edges. I love shooting into a bowl. It has helped me visualize the target area at a table. I picture the bowl at the other end of the table. It also helps me zone into the distance of the shot which for me has always been one of my biggest problems. Not much of problem anymore. 🙂

Doc, the video camera isn’t working out to well. You have to use an app and it isn’t to clear. I will have to try something else at another time. I don’t have anyone to critique my throw. I just practice drills, and grip.

tossing in to a bowl of sand is very good for seeing if the dice are square level and rotating together.

I will be checking that out soon. Thanks

There is an app for the IPad called SloPro that will let you do some slow motion viewing. The first version is free but there’s a fairly inexpensive upgrade that actually does work a little slower on the preview and is very helpful. You need a helper to video the toss for you.
I’m sure there are other apps, but this is working for us. Let us hear from you and others of other programs you find helpful!

I will discuss this with you in Memphis.

I use a camera on a tripod for slo-mo, a Casio EXILM,
and shoot at 210 frames/sec.
Then I play it on my pc even slower.
It shows my dice landings doing the ‘Helter-Skelter’ dance before hitting the wall!
That’s how I see what a shit shot that one was,
even after a nice ‘together’ dice swoop in-air with backspin.
Those random landings sure come up with a good SRR sometimes. Lucky ducky.
Also caught the ‘curve-in’ on the backswing.

EE a friend gave me a pair of Pipless dice, it really makes you concentrate on the grip, light staright fingers, slow smooth deliver, takes your mind off results.

Nice. Sounds good.
