Q:
Concerning privately owned casinos, as addressed in a recent QoD, what about: Tuscany, Ellis Island, Emerald and Rainbow (in downtown Henderson), and other smaller casinos in the Las Vegas valley?
A:
The previous QoD to which you’re referring, which ran on 6/6/2013, was specifically on the subject of "major" casinos that are all or part-owned by individuals, as opposed to corporations or banks. Before we get to the one-off and hole-in-the-wall joints, a few remaining conglomerates need to be taken into account:

•American Casino & Entertainment Properties. This division of Goldman Sachs owns The Stratosphere, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder and Arizona Charlie’s Decatur.

•Boyd Gaming. One of the two dominant players in the ‘locals’ casino scene, Boyd owns The Orleans, Gold Coast, Suncoast, Sam’s Town, the California and Fremont hotels, Main Street Station, and – in Henderson – the Eldorado and Jokers Wild casinos.

•Station Casinos’ flagship properties are Red Rock Resort, Green Valley Ranch Resort, Palace Station, Sunset Station, Boulder Station, and the Santa Fe Station hotels, Texas Station Gambling Hall, Fiesta Rancho and Fiesta Henderson hotels, plus Days Inn & Wild Wild West Gambling Hall. Station’s brand, however, extends to many small gambling joints. Through management entity Fertitta Entertainment LLC, it controls Magic Star Casino, Greens Gaming & Dining (aka Greens Café) and all Wildfire-branded casinos. The latter – as well as Barley’s Casino & Brewing Co. — are owned by Fertitta Holdco, owned 50/50 by Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta.

When it comes to the smaller stand-alone properties, here’s the current lay of the land, ownership-wise:

•Alamo Casino is owned by the Cashell Family Trust, led by former Station exec Robert Alan Cashell Jr.

•Aliante Casino-Hotel is owned by private-equity firm Standard General.

•Best Western Mardi Gras Hotel Casino is owned in equal parts by Jean Pierre Patrick Jaramillo, Michele Ginette Brennan and Philippe Francois Jaramillo.

•The Bighorn and Longhorn casinos are majority owned (67%) by Richard Iannone and Randy Craig Miller.

•Binion’s Gambling Hall and the Four Queens Hotel & Casino are wholly owned by TLC Casino Enterprises, of which Terry Caudill is the lone shareholder.

•Affinity Gaming owns Buffalo Bill’s, Whiskey Pete’s and Primm Valley Resort & Casino, down at the California state line, Silver Sevens (formerly Terrible’s), in Las Vegas, and Terrible’s Town Hall, in Henderson.

•Casino Montelago, out at Lake Las Vegas, is the property of Intrepid Gaming, aka Jon David Berkley.

•The Cannery and the Cannery East Casinos are co-owned by Millennium Gaming and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management, in a complicated arrangement whereby Millennium owns a direct majority of the casinos but Oaktree has substantial direct and (through an investment Millennium) indirect ownership.

•Clarion Hotel & Casino is a slot route operated by United Coin.

•Club Fortune Casino is owned by Carl Giudici.

•The Cosmopolitan is owned by a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank, which acquired it in a foreclosure.

•The D and the Golden Gate are owned by Desert Rock Enterprises, which is divided 78/22 between brothers Derek Stevens and Gregory J. Stevens.

•Ownership of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is routed via a shell game of limited-liability companies that eventually lead to Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian investment fund.

•Hooters hotel-casino (soon to change brands) is owned by a subsidiary of Canyon Capital Realty Advisors.

•Klondike Sunset is owned by the Woodrum Gaming Trust.

•La Bayou and Mermaids are owned by The SJB Trust, formerly Granite Gaming Holdings.

•The Las Vegas Club is listed as 100% owned by Santo Gaming, a front for international conglomerate Tamares Group (a "passive landlord," in the words of the Nevada Gaming Control Board). The same holds true for the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

•The Lucky Club Casino & Hotel is owned by Bruce Wayne Deifik.

•The Las Vegas Hotel & Casino (a.k.a. LVH, formerly the Las Vegas Hilton) is owned by Navegante Gaming.
