I recently came back from a Celebrity cruise. I shot well six out of nine nights. I had numerous teen rolls, back to back 26’s and on one night 30’s and a 42. But this post is not about me, but about wealthy CFs. Throughout the cruise, one gentleman took a $10000 marker each night. Even though he was up from my rolls, he quickly gave it back time after time. I found out from talking to him that he owns a large jewelry chain throughout the Carribean. I felt that keeping his winnings did not mean very much to him.
Another nightly player who I got to know, also gave his substantial winnings back time after time. He would buy in for about $7000-8000 each night. He was on most of my significant rolls. I asked him why he does not put part of his winnings aside. He said he just played the game for fun. I learned that he owned two internet websites where a lot of money was made daily.
I never thought about having so much money that winning was fun and losing did not make any difference to the player. I guess I am just naive.

Before becoming an AP, I had the same attitude, I would say I’m only taking $$ to Las Vegas and that’s all I’m going to loose. Now when I hear people say that, it dives me crazy. Here’s an envelope, just ship the money to the Salvation Army instead.

Funny you should mention Phil Ivey. He once showed up at a table where the Five Horsemen were playing. We had the table to ourselves until Phil and a friend showed up at the far end of SR. Stickman was just ending his turn and Frank who was blocking at the end of SL passed the dice. Phil bought in and shot the dice. He was come betting with a $5K base bet and max 3-4-5X in odds. So with 3 numbers he had approximately $75K out and with 6 numbers it was $150K on the table. He lost somewhere around $75K to $100K on his roll. Then his friend shot and had a reasonable hand. Phil made back what he lost on his hand and had a profit of around $100K or so. He colored up and left after only 2 hands, his own and his friends. He did not stick around for the horsemen to shoot.
That turned out to be his HUGE loss. All four of us had great hands. Dominator started us off with a terrific hand. Nick at Night followed suit with a good set of rolls of his own. I shot next and had a big number. Then Stickman ended our session with a block buster of his own. I don’t remember the specific numbers. But as I recall the rolls were all in the high 20 to 60 range. It might have been something like 67, 28, 42, 53. Don’t hold me to the specific numbers, I just remember they were all very good numbers.
It is memorable because of what we did after Stickman shot. We collectively decided to call it quits for a while to go and have a drink together. We all did well and wanted to relax, enjoy each others company and reminisce about our session. One of the topics of discussion was, "How many millions do you think Phil would have won if he stayed for our rolls?" I ran some numbers through my head and Stick got out his calculator to check my math. It has been too many years and too many sessions to remember what we came up with but it was a significant number. It is funny that he thinks he won because he walked with a profit after 2 hands. Little does he know the opportunity he lost by walking. Even if he only stayed and didn’t bet for a few rolls he would have gotten on us at some point when he realized what was happening.
