In the high-dollar world of casino gambling, the house loses every now and then.

Such a rare event happened April 29 at the glitzy Lumière Place casino on the St. Louis riverfront. Gamblers that day hit some big jackpots, Missouri Gaming Commission officials said Friday. One gambler walked away from a table game as the winner of a jackpot exceeding $40,000, commission officials said. On the same day, a slot machine jackpot topped $272,000.

As a result, Lumière’s winnings for April 29 totaled zero, at least as far as gaming commission accounting practices are concerned. Lumière paid no state gaming tax for that day but still had to pay a state admission tax of $16,868 for the 8,434 customers who entered the casino that day.

Lumiere’s unusual zero-dollar day contributed to its 3.4 percent revenue drop in April, compared with April 2012
