Gamblers

Spread the love

Many people think those of us that enjoy casinos have some type of character defect.
They think we are compulsive gamblers going to the shylocks to get cash to get back in the game.
Although there are certainly people that have a serious gambling problem, most of the people I know are what I call “social gamblers’.
I do not smoke. I drink alcohol on rare occasions and usually just one or two drinks.  I do not use drugs legal or illegal. I admit I definitely have bad eating habits. I am a good husband and a great father.
As a pastime I enjoy gambling.
Well I don’t know if you can call it gambling. To me the word gambling means making a wager or series of wagers in which your financial health or lifestyle is on the line sort of like someone gambling the rent or mortgage money. If he loses the wife and kids are homeless.
What I do is I play games, casino games, for money.  I guess the money is how I keep score.
The level I play at is insignificant to my overall net worth.
I have worked hard for thirty years and I feel I can spend my discretionary entertainment budget how I like.
I have invited friends to accompany me to the casino and some respond, “I work too hard for my money to throw it away.”
That comment infuriates me
I have a friend, “Frankie I”. His wife loves slots. He hates casinos and will not go with her. When she goes for an overnight comped trip with one of her girlfriends he is furious because she is “wasting money”. Yet this same guy has a fishing boat that costs around $60,000. Add to that the Yacht Club membership fees, docking fees, depreciation, fuel costs and maintenance and he is dumping thousands of additional dollars into the sea each year.  What does she get for all his expenses, when he is lucky and the fish are biting, he gets to bring home some fish. The same fish that I can drive to the local fishmonger and pickup for a few dollars a pound. But he does not see that. He says he is a “Fisherman”

Another thing, when friends ask about vacations and I say I like Vegas they act as though I am suggesting a trip to Afghanistan.
This aggravates me because there are few entertainment options in which you have a chance of coming home with more money than you went with.
Book a trip to Las Vegas and if you are lucky you might win a bit. Add to that some comps and you can get a  great getaway and it does not cost a dime. Try going to  Disney World for an inexpensive vacation. Forget it. They gouge you and pick your pocket at every turn.

So to me having a separate account, the “GTC 401 G” is a harmless entertainment expense. Gambling responsibly is fun. It also provides jobs for many people.

Your thoughts?

Scan, you are right on. You describe Alligator Rose and I to a "T."

I do have one comment. I say you, Alligator Rose, myself and many GTC people are not gamblers. A gambler is one who plays the casino games where he has no mathimatical chance of winning in the long run. As nongamblers we only play games where we have developed a skill that shifts that math advantage to our side of the table. If we do not have this advantage we simply don’t play. Dom calls these people advantage players. I call them non gamblers.

A geat post.

WE DON’T have vary many friends who like to gamble. But one year friends of mine asked if we wanted to meet them in Vegas that they loved it. Well we said sure.
We meet up with them and decided to do the strip. Now this was back when everybody walked. So they went and exchanged a 20 for quarters. Let the FUN begin. They put ONE Q IN A machine and turn the casino till they get BORED then move to next casino with another Q . Six hours or more like 12 later we are done with 2 rolls of Qs and they are ready for bed. Went up one side of strip and down the other. Never did hit a jackpot but did get to play a few Qs at more then one casino . 😀 😀 Got are money back on a few wins to play at the next casino. Was VARY HAPPY when that happened. 😀 😀 😀
My mind was all wound up with my legs could not go any more so went to BJ table with 40 dollars and stayed there for 6 hrs and left with 20. But it was easier to walk to my room by then worth the 20 .
So we really don’t go with friends .
Good Rolling. 😀 😀

Scan,

I think you are right on the money, and I couldn’t have said it better myself. I also agree with Doctor Crapology, we’re not gamblers, but advantage players. I"ve always had the mindset of being a hustler, especially when it comes to poker or billiards. The hustler does not wager a bet, unless he does have the advantage. otherwise, he really is gambling. I like your section where you said you play casino games for money, and that’s how I look at what I do. We here, are dedicated to playing with an edge, thru practice and doing proper maths for the betting. I’ve never even played the Lottery ever in my life. I only play the things where I can get an edge. anyways, great post you made.

A gambler goes to the table no matter how crowded and starts betting things that in the long run are not good for their pocketbook.

A non gambler goes and watches the table for 2 hours (their position is not available), plays the game in their head, see what the five count does, gets amazed when a CF has a 40 roll, but is not tempted to take any spot just to lay down some money and gamble on the next throw, being even if the throw count is 42 the next throw is a random event if the thrower is just flinging the dice!

Just my opinion.
