Sandy hit on Monday with all she had, and we have been without power, heat, and hot water ever since.
Yesterday and today went to my temple in another town to warm up and have hot coffee and food.
This am we manned a shelter at a local church for CERT ( Community Emergency Response Team) of which we are members and have been trained for disaster help, as well as the Medical Reserve Corp, MRC.

However, our home was 57 degrees, and I can’t take it anymore, and I don’t want to risk Charlie getting sick. So, we are now on our way to my children in MA.

There are 100,000 wires down in our area, a s well as trees. It took 15 minutes to get out of our little town. The expectation is that it will be 1-2 weeks minimum for our area. High density populations are first.

Alan Korman offered a room through Monday, but it took him 1 1/2 hours to get to GN. Only authorized people are allowed on the AC expressway, and Gov. Christie has not yet given permission for others to go n the roads. Since it was an unknown, Alan said be safe and go to MA to be sure.

Last night I slept in front of the gas fireplace, but it barely gives out heat. It’s been at least 40 years since I camped out, and I was 18 when I crossed the Continental Divide in CO on horseback. At 70, my body isn’t ready to go back to the 1800’s.

We waited 50 minutes to tank up with gas, and that was a short line. Most are 2 hrs. long, and then they run out of gas. We were very lucky. As CERT, we were also able to pick up 2small bags of dry ice from the Bergen County Police Academy. Supermarkets were out of batteries, candles, and ice. Some people can’t use their toilets. Yuk!

Dice Pi lot offered us to go to CA, but. Their is a back log of flights due to the closure of air space, and I don’t see his plane waiting for us on the Tarmac.

Skinny has power. Jack does not, and is waiting to hear from Alan if they should go there. All my friends here are in the same boat we are in, so we are on a 4 hour drive. The first rest stop didn’t have working toilets, only portable toilets. Smelly!

Glad to hear you both are okay. We only lost power for 24 hours but no power means no water since we are on a well and no water means no heat. Boy was I glad we put up some firewood for the fireplace. Even with the fireplace going the room I sleep in got down into the low 50s. We had 40 gal of bottled water stored up and plenty of gas in the vehicles. Since I can’t drive or do anything with my left side I was very gratefull to have Mel my wife and best friend to help me thru this. Sandy is gone and our home was undamaged but many of our nieghbors were not so lucky. glad to hear you and Sandtrap are okay. Besafe and stay warm. Hope to see you this winter sometime. Mel sends her prayers and best wishes.

Our electric co. says it will be at least until 11/11 before we have power. NJ is trying to come u p with alternative plans for voting. I already mailed my absentee ballot, and Sandtrap’s is in the car. After living overseas for 11 years, I would make sure my vote is counted.

None of our friends has power. My condo complex has 100 units of senior citizens, most of whom are well over 75. I called Rockland Electric to see if we could be a priority, but no promises. The complex was built in the 1980’s when everything was all electric. Most have children in the area who are also without power, so no respite there. Three of Sandtrap’s children live in NJ and none have power.

Motels/hotels were all booked up for a week. Many booked before Sandy hit. We were too late, but are fortunate that my children have not only been welcoming, but were very insistent.

We are really very lucky, as we sustained no damage, and so many are so worse off than we are.

Good news! Alan called me on my birthday, the second year in a row he’s done that. Mentioned you guys and that everyone was ok. He sure is a wonderful person.

We have power! Whoopee! A neighbor called Sunday night, and we were on our way Monday morning. Stopped to fill up with gas an hour and a half from home in CT. Went to Shop Rite, which was a zoo. I guess everyone in this area got power on Sunday, and they all went to fill up the empty refrigerators at the same time. People were waiting in line for parking spots, the same as the day after Thanksgiving.

The candles and flashlights are put away, and we slept in our own beds in our warm home. Right now, it doesn’t get any better than that. We hope our friends on the Jersey shore will be able to get to their homes soon.

Very relieved to hear you and Sandtrap are ok. I meant to call you but my cell phone was ruined in the bad weather. I am still working on getting it replaced. Stay warm and dry. I hope to see you and Sandtrap this winter sometime.
