Sandy

Spread the love

Hope the only effect the Storm had on anyone was to keep you inside and you used the time productively.

No tree down on Long Island near you Frank!

In Ontario we have had some trees down and some power outages and at this time only one person has died from Sandy. She was hit by a falling sign from "Staples" store in Toronto, as she went in to buy battries. We have had wind and rain since Sunday and it is to continue until Fri-Sat. The worst was on Tues night. No problem with any trees or power lines where I live.

We have been very fortunate with Sandy in Canada compared to our cousens to the south along the eastern seaboard. The news reports have been showing all the flooding and damage.

As a Side: Last Sat night we were watching the CTV National News at Night and announcer said that she thought she would never hear her name mentioned as per a disaster on the National News. Yes her name is "Sandy Rinaldo". This is true………

Frank is still in Hawaii. He is missing the whole thing.

I managed to get back from the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas with my wife in time for the storm. But, we were pretty lucky.

No rain to speak of, so when we lost power our basement did not flood with a sump running on the battery back up. Lost power at 8:10 PM on Mon. Power came back on at 7:15 PM today. Only without power for 23 hours when we heard it could be as long as 7 to 10 days.

Minor damage from the high winds. Lost a 30 foot tree, about a dozen shingles from the roof and a down spout blew off from the front of the house. I found all the pieces in the backyard and was able to put it back in place thanks to the help from one of my son’s friend who stopped by to see if we needed anything. I bet he did not expect to be climbing 30′ up a ladder when he came by.

Drove around the area to check things out. Saw a lot of downed trees, some really huge. Saw a car with a tree that went through the front windshield and driver’s window. Miraculously, the driver was unharmed. He must of ducked into the passenger seat because there was no room for him in the driver’s seat with that tree there.

Been watching the news since the power came back. There is lots of devastation thru a lot of NJ. We were lucky to only have minimal damage.

Diane Sawyer was reporting from AC last night…..looked really bad there. Hope everyone is ok through all of this.

Take care and stay dry!

I lost power early about 230pm Monday. I may not get it back for a while.

The lines for fuel at the few working gas stations are crazy . It was 2;hours at the rest stops gas station. On the Garden State Parkway

I told my wife a month ago that I wanted to get a whole house natural gas generator. She said no way we dus niy need it. She now realizes she was wrong.

Charging cell phones is an adventure every day.

I am sorry if getting used to no power it us a strange lifestyle. I think that it is a novelty now but it will soon get ugly as people start to run out of the basics.

Just got my morning paper and the headlines was that 43 people were killed. The damage is terrible. Have seem these before in Texas as hurricanes come out of the Gulf of Mexico. I don’t live on the coast but I have seen some real damage even here in Central Texas.

Rose and I have been thinking about all of our friends on the Eastern Seaboard.

So glad that you and your wife fared well. How are the Goddess and Sandtrap doing?

The Goddess and Sandtrap do not have any power yet. They are faring OK. Their temple has power and is providing meals and hot water.

Raging Baritone does not have power either. But he has a generator for power so he is doing fine. He needed gas today for the generator. I told him where I saw gas stations that were pumping and he was going to go out to find gas to keep the generator running.

I live near Trenton, approx. 69 miles from Atlantic City. The storm was marked by spurts of intense rain (much worse on the coast!!), and a steady wind of 40 mph with one or two second 80-100 mph gusts that on their own could play with a tree limb like it was a matchstick. These hit residential or, if unlucky, distribution cables, knocking out whole sectors but mostly small neighborhood patches of 2-5 blocks all over the state. The sheer scattered effect of the outages made repair difficult since the repairmen had to go to 100s of small outages instead of the repair of a few major bad spots. The last estimate before *most* repairs are complete is 6 Nov 2012 (election day, Tuesday). My own power went out early on last Monday at 4:30pm, and I got it back on Wednesday at 9:35pm at night. I sufferred 2 frigid nights without power or heat. I consider myself very lucky in that restoration didn’t take much longer!

Picture taken in Atlantic City after Sandy. Yes, that is a shark on a flooded street in AC.

Scan is correct. The above pictures were photoshopped and are not real.

I believe that photo has been debunked.

Are you saying even sharks don’t feel safe around the Boardwalk? 😉

Seriously though, I hope all of our GTC family impacted by Sandy come through this relatively unscathed.

See my post under "News From NJ". Sorry to correct Skinny, but we wer e not fine. Although we went to my Temple for hot coffee and heat, there were no showers, and we froze at night. We decided to give up Thursday, and went to my children in MA and will alternate staying in their two homes.
