Another Practice Idea

Spread the love

I have been having good results lately with a practice technique I am using. I always hesitate to post this type of an idea because it is actually pretty simple and I think 99% of the people that read here will say, “Well duh, girl where have you been?” I am going to mention this anyway for the 1% who may be new or haven’t thought about this before.

Lately, I have been practicing several times per week from Stick R 1/2. If my dice don’t look good from this short distance, how do I think they are going to suddenly improve from farther back? The short distance really lets me see what the dice are actually doing in the air and as they hit the felt. Also, I still have problems with too much energy on my shot and this distance helps me create a softer toss. Any new tweak I am trying with my toss now gets an audition at this short distance. If it works then I continue to move back at small increments to see if or at what point the new item starts to create a problem and why that might be.

If you are having a particular problem with your throw then I suggest giving this method a try. You may be surprised by what you can see at this short distance. I will warn you that this process can be quite tedious and requires a lot of patience but if it makes my toss a money maker than the “tortoise has again won the race”! 😎

Opa!
I hadn’t heard of this before. Makes a lot of sense.
Now do you have a table, or are you moving your throwing station closer to the receiving station?

Thanks for the tip! 🙂

Hi Agame!

To be more accurate than my original post, I actually start my short practise at 60 inches instead of my normal throwing position of 90 inches from the back wall. I don’t have a table, darn!! I move my throwing station but the receiving station could be moved as well depending on your particular set up.

Once I realized I wanted to continue to use this method of practice, I used masking tape to mark where the legs of my throwing station should be. I put tape on my tile floor in 6 inch increments. This makes it easier to change my set distances any time I want to and keep everything square. I also keep a hand level in my practice area so once I have moved my station I can easily lay the level on the top and make sure my throwing surface is level.

Hope this information will help you! 🙂

Yes, I do the same now for the last few months. I read about this on an earlier post, not exactly as you outlined, but fairly similar. It also helps set up you mentally to toss softly. I do this into a bowl too to help work on aim. (thanks, Bman, for that tip!)
I have forgotten or did not have much time in some practice sessions and find that I don’t have such a great session… now adding it in just about every time.
practice, practice, practice!
good reminder for everyone, Getagrip!
hope all is well with you,
The Griz

Thanks for bringing this great idea up again, Getagrip.

Whatever works! Newer members may not have read about this in the archive.

I love it when someone posts this kind of "duh" information. Usually (almost always actually) when I’m having problems it is because I have gotten away from the fundamentals. B-Man used to post those simple "duh" type tips, but it helps to be reminded to go back to basics. Something as simple as a straight backswing and follow though (my Achilles heel) make a world of difference.

I also like to re-read "Dice Control Revolution" once a year or so. I seem notice something different each time.

Apologies to Getagrip.

Thanks for pointing out my error, Agame.

But you write some terrific posts as well.

My finally learning the launch phase of throwing the dice:

1. What I found (its in a post in another category) is now proven fact…after accidentally launching the dice close to "perfectly" (defined as within the threshold of effectiveness to achieve full dice axis control and close to identical attitude, trajectory, and spin when comparing one die to the other) I thought it would be a lot easier to return to doing the same thing after a good night’s sleep so that the total body feel and muscle memory goes into longterm high priority storage. It today took me just 8 rolls to duplicate it and bring on a pair of hardway 5s. With a sufficiently effective launch one need not worry about keeping the dice close together. Nor must one add a slow backspin. Nor worry about anything other than arm swing (pendulum) speed…that determines when the dice decide to roll about 75-80 degrees from finger pads to the very tips of fingers 2 and 4. Finger 3 seems to act as a slight "rail" so that finger 2 and 4 are turned into the slightest of troughs or linear valleys. Finger 3 acts as a very almost imperceptable ridgeline. Since the dice are being lightly held so close to the ends of the fingertips its hard to imagine that the dice have space remaining in which to roll off the ends. But yes they do (FOR ME) and that creates the attitudinal identicality as the pair travel together, spinning equally fast (very close to equally). The physics behind it is the gyroscopic effect, the same force in miniature that keeps the Earth’s tilt at 23.5 degrees from straight up and down relative to the planet’s orbital plane.

2. Dice ejection is mediated totally by the subconscious for me. After picking the dice up I use fingers 2 & 4 to force the 6 face and the 1 face (hardway set) so that the two die are flush against each other. When picking them up I make real sure that the 4th finger is fully on the side with fingers 2 & 3 and beware so that finger 2 does not rest on the corner of the left die (I am right handed). Then I stare at the LZ (landing zone) and let my mind go blank. I let concentration build for 1-2 secs and let my subconscious initiate all motions that result in pendulumming my arm until the dice roll out and away on their own accord (thanks Dominator for emphasizing this, in a public part of 8 Elements of Dice Control…I remembered this from you).

So! Progress is being made! Much of it is NOT TRYING TOO HARD AND LETTING THE TRUSTY SUB-C DO THE WORK. I save my logical brain for how/when should I bet…I’ve got a long way to go in that dept. since I am super-cautious. Frank’s given me ideas….so has that scam Nelli system I investigated. I’ll take a good idea from where I see it.

p.s. trivia: our planet does not spin at a steady rate. The wind blows against the mountains and other surface irregularities unevenly. The planet is always spinning a bit faster, then a bit slower, never a steady speed. Chaos always prevails! Only our math is equal. Never the real universe.

Last night was night 3 (starting with my 1st near-"perfect" launch as night 1, and last night it took me 11 rolls to again find in my brain and execute my favorite new dice launching. One property of it is reasuring but bizarre: A couple times I swung my arm too fast and the dice hit the backwall first instead of the LZ 6 inches in front of it. No problem, they were together matching each other so closely they bounced off (a little too hard), but I checked the result…two 5s. Another time I threw them so softly they just plunked down on the carpet in front of my makeshift practice rig (real one a week away from getting here). The dice on carpet were…two 4s. They seemed to be so identical with one another that as long as the landing does not do to one die something very different than what the other die "experiences" then the hardway is not imperiled altho it would be if they were not so identical one vs the other die. Then there were many times at first when I was yet to find "my groove" for that night. Mostly on axis but no identical faces…no smooth feeling in my hands as the die depart…pretty mediocre rolls all in all. (no 7s at least, although not in my groove after more rolls a 7 would no doubt show. My task ahead is pretty plain:
A. Nothing more matters til my for real practice rig arrives in about 7 days from FedEx. My makeshift backwall now is a smooth no-pyramids board. The pyramids WILL INDEED TRY to do to one die something somewhat different than what the other goes through (unless they land on equivalent places comparing the pair of pyramids and the attitude/spin/path/speed for each die. In the groove the 2nd set of factors should all be very similar one die vs the other.
B. Then I must adapt to the frustrations of the better practice rig, and then see if and how many in the groove throws yielding hardway results I can put together in real life practice. I’ll want triads or better to take with me to the ACY casinos next visit Dec10 at the Claridge/Bally-Complex. It’ll be a 3 nighter on the boardwalk for me….

My free month here will have expired. Unless I can talk Frank into giving me that 60-day free extension of access (consider this, Frank Scoblete, my sincere request to you for 60 more forum days! If he says no, then I wish all of you the very best of life. We live in a very amazing world. Do not let the pettiness of many other humans take away from each of you the wonder of being alive you may have been lucky to have known long ago as a kid if at no other time as well!! Good Luck to All…each of you is, I would bet, a very cool person…I hope I someday get the privilege to meet some of you in person. Like Frank I often play at very odd hours, often very late at night when the masses sleep and the stress of the world quiets down. I’d love to play on a table with a couple other advantage persons. So far the most I found was 1…he left after 10 mins, back in mid-Sep/2012 at Harrah’s.

Come on! For 4.50 a month you can’t pay? Go here: http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/signin.shtml

So why not sign up like the rest of us. It was nice of Frank to give you a free 60 days but don’t take advantage of him. You aren’t ENTITLED to a subscription.

lylastar You should try throwing into a box of sand . That will show you how your dice are landing before they bonce into the wall. Just a thought.
Did you look at pics from post that I brought up ? ( TABLE )
I started to build a practice rig then said to myself that it would not be that much harder to just add 8 more feet for full table.
Plus great for parties. It took me awhile as I did the pay as you build way.Things do add up.
Also I suggest that you read all old posts before your time is up. That alone is worth the money.
Good Rolling. 😀

This is absolutely incorrect.

N2S is right as usual.

Where the circumference of the earth is greatest, the speed is about 1,038 miles per hour (1,670 kph).

A day, full rotation of the earth, is 23 hours 56 minutes and 4 seconds. Is it constant, No. It is slowing down. It has been measured that the rate has slowed by 17 milliseconds in the last 100 years! This is due to the tidal effects the Moon has on Earth’s rotation. Wind/ rain /snow / mountains / etc. have no effect.

BTW, the Earth spins counter-clock wise as viewed from the North Star.

Our Science Lesson is concluded.

Holy shit! I did’t even know we had been to the north star yet. 😀

Dogleg I like your dice on side of post .Do you have some like that for your x mass tree?
Good Rolling. 😀

Finisher I have some on my rear view. Now that you mentioned it I going to look for some for my tree. thanks
