Craps

What the heck is this bet???

Spread the love

I was at the casino here in the Midwest last week. During the play a guy comes up with 2K. Within 30 minutes he is up to 8K and walks.

Between all the chips the the box man has and the crazy crapper bets box in the middle of the craps table the guy throws three $100 chips. He then says "4,2" "5,4" and "5,3", (don’t quote me on these because I wasn’t paying 100% attention until I heard his chip count as he left).

They paid him sometimes over 1.7K for a $100 chip. Understand that these chips are lying on the green felt BETWEEN all the box man’s chips and the large crazy crapper bets in the middle of the table.

Can someone tell me what the heck this guy was doing???

Thank you. 😯

Wall,

It sounds to me like he was playing a "Hop" bet. This is a one roll bet on a particular combination outcome of the dice; for example "4,2" means he is betting $100 that the next roll will have the dice show a 4 and a 2 (or a 2 and a 4). The odds against this happening are 17 to 1. The casino normally pays 15 to 1 if the bet wins. That means for a $100 bet the payoff is $1,500. I can’t explain why it would be $1,700 as there are no bets that pay 17 to 1 of which I am aware. If he also took the bet down after it hit he would be given $1,600. If he bets a pair (2/2, 3/3, etc.), there is only one way to throw the number so the odds against hitting this bet are 35 to 1, and the house normally pays 30 to 1. This might help explain the higher than $1,500 payouts.
These bets have a huge house edge of 11.11 percent for non-pairs and a whopping 13.89 percent for pairs. While he may have collected a lot of money this particular session, he will ultimately lose between $11.11 and $13.89 for every $100 he bets. These are not bets you would ever want to make.

Some of the older(?) felts don’t have hop bets on the layout, so the box places the bets where he did. I bet if you were to watch close, you would have seen him flash what appears to be gang signs for the cameras (4/2, 5/3).

I’ve seen them do the same kind of thing with hopping 7’s on layouts with the "5 for 1" payouts. Chip on the 5= 5/2, chip on the ‘for’= 4/3, chip on the 1=6/1.
