Some mental help

Spread the love

As an engineer, SCUBA instructor and musician, for all my life I try to be aware of my surroundings while I do various things.

YET, to get into a ZONE (as described by many) I find my mind always being distracted by the surroundings.

How or what can I do, practice, learn, to try to ignore the surroundings?

The last two outings ( which included today) I was throwing nicely, but I found myself being slightly distracted by various things.

Today I did well, so much so with hardways, that the young man who bought in, gave me a tip after I colored up. He was on all the hardways for $5, and I hit all of them, and a couple of them twice.

So if there are suggestions or ideas I would appreciate them.

Stealthman.

Most of us get distracted when at the table, especially when a longer that ususal period of time is experienced between rolls–such things as a long pay off or a dispute over a payoff. I find that I tune it out as best I can by concentrating on the dice while they are in the middle so I know exactly what I need to do to easliy set the dice. Another thing is to pick something behind the pit such as a slot machine sign and concentrate on it. Lastly, where I normally stand at SL1, I am directly in front of the number nine in the field area of the felt. I concentrate on it.

These are ideas I have picked from others in the past. You just have to learn how to think through these things. It takes time but will come as you progress in your GTC journey.

Hope to see you soon in the casino.

Just my $.02 worth.

Timmer uses earplugs to eliminate most of the distractions. It works well be he never hears me saying press, press, press!

I use ear plugs when Timmer speaks too. 🙄

Oh wait, that is not what I meant. 😳 Or was it? 😉

Continuing with distractions – I guess the sounds do not bother me but I am always scanning around me in real life. So at the table even though I concentrate on my spot to throw to, I feel myself being eye distracted.

Doc, I will have to try the in front ( either a machine or number or the dice) on my next visit.

From some of the older posts I got the feeling of being in the zone being able to turn the outside world out and just focus on the throw! I am part way there, but I have a way to go, like a number of us.

Thanks for the suggestions, because of my recent trip to Denver and playing in a total different arena, with other GTC people, my shot ( my opinion) seemed to improve a bunch. So much so I had two GOOD sessions in a row, both technique wise and profit wise.

The journey continues.

CIII – I have that CD and it helps me stay prepared for going to the casino. That is using the technique to practice your throw in your mind, over and over again.

But at the casino, I know from the past when I am throwing it seems to get real quiet, as tune out the noise but the distractions of people moving is harder to tune out. A life long habit is hard to turn off at a moments notice.

Thanks for the ideas.

Stealthman With all the talking while you threw you still almost made the fire bet. I should have turned on the radio. 😀
Hope we get a chance to roll in Laughlin some time.
Hope the two of you enjoyed Arizona.
Good Rolling. 😀

STEALMAN, you don"t need any mental help. imagine yourself 50ft underwater here in sunny puerto rico, and a hog is about to eat you,and you wake up, and you know that nothing will distract you at the table, because you are in the zone. jaime. down here in sunny pureto rico. 😆 😆 😆

Ok I’ll be the odd guy who likes to hear the chatter while he throws.
Actually enjoy a certain level of people talking the whole time.
No yelling or arguing or I will put the dice back on the table and wait to reset.
When I get the dice and everyone goes completely silent it freaks me out.

May the dice be with you T-Burg

what works for some may not work for others, that is for sure.

Speaking just for me….. i understand your mind cant concentrate on two things at the same time
try typing when your mind is some where else…..

So since i am pretty sure i cant concentrate on my shot and everything else, i dont try…. when
my shot is over … i review it, was it ok, is there anything i need to adjust…. then i concentrate on what
is going on and try to enjoy it…. it is part of playing craps.

when the dice get to me…… thats it, i turn off the rest of the world.,…. 100% focus on the throw, 100%
i dont care if some is talking i cant hear them, i dont care if they are moving there hands i cant see them
i dont care if there are chips in the way….. 100% focus on where i am landing and my release.

If i worry about anything else,,,, particularly if there are chips in the way… i am screwed….

100% concentration is not hard we all do it every day…… walking in icy side walk…. driving on icy roads
going up and down steps….

I am no expert, but i think you also have to be able to turn it off and on….if you try that 100% concentration after the shot, during the pay offs etc,,,,, all the other stuff creeps in , your no longer at 100% after a few tosses….

When you have the dice, the world just does not exist, after the shot relax……and on and on….you will feel much
better at the end of the hand, than if you keep getting tighter and tighter….

Very well put, gman. Relaxing a bit during the payoffs helps prolong your concentration when you need it – during shooting.

I know this sounds strange, but has anyone tried using a headset to hear relaxing music while playing? Poker players do this all the time.

No earphones, but I have sung to myself as I was throwing. 😉

I would have to agree with gman on concentration. It doesn’t take much of an error in the toss to see the seven. The toss has to continue to be the same on each shot. A little to high, a little to low, dice hitting edges after release. You need focus. I need focus.
