Common PROBLEM for “Hard Nine”

Spread the love

This one is for my shooting buddy Nard Nine. It’s related to GETAGRIP’s tag line – “The PROBLEM isn’t the PPROBLEM. The PROBLEM is your (our) attitude toward the PROBLEM” (Jack Sparrow). When we’re shooting together or alone, we get knocked off our rhythm be the IDIOTS at the table. I am absolutely positive you other GTC shooters have experienced this.

Just the other day, I get the dice and start my 3rd roll. I’ve got a feel for the table and have located my landing zone. Alert players in the SL end have seen my shooting style and place their bets to the left of my landing zone. I give them a nod and lip a thank you. I can feel it, I MEAN I CAN FEEL IT!!! After my 19th roll and 3rd point made I look down at my tracking sheet, all box numbers, not one 2-3-11 or 12. The 4th point is established – a 4. The dice are slide to me, I set for the 4 (2×2 with 3’s facing me). My grip is precise, right on the edge of the dice with no split in the dice and the dice level to the table and my release point. I look down and target my mark. As I’m taking my relaxing breadth a guy is squeezing in the left hook flicks out a field bet which lands on the edge. He’s chasing it around the table as it circles the PAY DOUBLE 2 field. I put down the dice and stare at the IDIOT. The whole table knows what just happened. Hard Nine knows me well and knows my next action is to airmail the dice to the IDIOTS chest. The whole table gasps in awe. The dealer is chuckling as he retrieves the dice from one of the players. He knows what I just did. Yep you guessed it – my next toss ends the roll.

For my game to get to the next level, I need to fix MY PROBLEM. My reaction to the problem is the problem. I’ve been taken out of my rhythm, not by the IDIOT at the table (the tables will always be filled with IDIOTS), but by my reaction to the IDIOT. It’s easy to say, just recoup your thoughts and recapture that ZEN feeling. But it is extremely hard to do.

I NEED TO FIX MY PROBLEM, that is my endeavor from here going forward.

Thanks you GETAGRIP for those timely words!!

Nice read. Excellent self-analysis. Knowing you have a problem is the first step to solving it. 😉

Just look at it that on the first day that you went to the craps table how much did you know how the right thing was . Now you have learned more does not mean that all others players have learned what you have learned about the game . Some may have been playing longer then you and have not even learned when to bye in let alone all the other things that you have learned .
Just saying .
Good Rolling. 😀 🙂

Scooter you are right on. It’s all about attitude. We say it a little different. When there is a distraction we have to learn how to refocus quickly and get back into our groove. This is probably one of the best posts I have seen in some time.

We thank you for posting.

Having someone buy in or place a bet while you are shooting, "is" not "if"it is going to happen. It happens to me all the time. Knowing it is going to happen, a great shooter is able to re-group and continue on to make his shot. That, I think I would call the pressure shot. Seems like more pressure than the Suits coming down to watch you if you are making a lot of money, but that is their job, so my emotions are not as high as someone sticking out their hand. Just think the next time it happens, you get to hone your skills and make that great shot in spite of the interference that will happen. Like they say, if you do something enough times you get pretty good at it. Make it your shot and not your anger.

Well said. And that is why Rose and Doc welcome the phone ringing or someone knocks on the door when we are practicing. We take care of the situation, return to the table, take a deep breath refocus and keep rolling just like we would in the casino.

Absolutely! Getting that zen back due to the crap around the table and therefore in between my ears, is indeed harder than any pressure the crew, box, floor can bring. Must focus on THE NEXT SHOT, even thinking about the last shot, or what we think someone else might be thinking is bad. THE NEXT SHOT!

Yes, and after reading of all the negative effects of drinking and smoking, I have deceided to quit reading. (just kidding)

Well written. I like the read and LOVE the topic!

I say in class and have always said this game is 20% technical and 80% mental.

A few points if I may – In your mind you make too big of an issue that you need your landing zone clean. You make it a point in the read that your friends or others know and clear your landing zone for you. Big mistake. You believe, In your mind that you need that landing zone clear for you to have a big roll and all things need to be perfect – no late buy ins or anything. STOP THAT THINKING!

Start practicing throwing into a cup or something, moving your landing zone.

Next thing – What set did you use to establish the point of 4. My guess is it was not the 2V set, but you changed to the 2V set to make the point. I disagree with this for a few reasons. if you established the 4 with a different set, then if you throw the dice the same way with the set you used, you should and will make the 4. Also changing the set has you thinking again at the table. You and everyone needs to shoot with an EMPTY MIND. Also you used a set that has a greater chance of throwing a 7 than using the hardway set. You have to throw a perfect throw and have that perfect throw land on 2 of the 4 sides for you to make the point. Remember that this game is not about making points but avoiding the 7.

Thank you for this post! it gave me the opportunity to bring up many factors that will make all of us more successful.

Thanks Dom.
Being half witted as I am, there is plenty of room upstairs to have random thoughts and distractions bounce around in the empty space. Really need to tune out those distractions and focus on the only thing that matters – and that is the next shot.

As for the hard way sets, sorry if something was miss conveyed in my use of sets. I always use the hard way sets – ALWAYS. The HARDWAY set that I have a higher propensity to hit the 4 is the 2×2’s on top with the 3’s facing me. This has been verified with my charting all the hard way sets over 10,000 throws on my 12 foot table in my basement, (exhausting). That’s the edge in my throw and I bet into that tracked advantage.

Now that the 20% mechanics is nearly mastered, I’m working on the other 80%. (MORE EXHAUSTING) !!!

Looking forward to attending a TUNE UP session soon (if the price is right). How to see you soon.

For the mental part – try thinking of a calm place – a place that your mind can take you that puts a smile on your face. Then do something that will trigger that thought like touching your wedding ring, watch, ear, or something. Do this exercise 5 X’s per day ….. think about this place while touching a part of your body or something attached to your body. Do this for 3 weeks.

So now when you are at a table that something happens hopefully you will touch and this good thought will come to your mind and calm you down.

As far as a tune up and if the "price is right" — well what can I – if $200 iis too expensive to have a tune with two of the best teachers we have Doc and Rose, I can’t help you 😀

if youre playing at the casino near ORD, its a given that people will squeeze in, buy in, or just crap in during your roll. In the morning/day, its the old retired people that should know better. in the afternoon its working people who just got off. try playing in indiana and get 7 star status or reserve a table with a big line of credit. let me know when your crew is out.

GreenMachine, Rarely ORD for what your mention and more, and I live 20minutes North of it, IN is my home turf even though it takes 3x as long to get there, mostly Scooter’s too, but he heads to MI and the other IN when he feels like making a day of it. We need to meet up some time. We’ve had reserved tables at both of the nearest IN properties, but not recently.

All the best
