still a newb, pls be easy on me. looking for input as i have never bought the 5 or 9 before.
was in vegas yesterday at a table at the X. was hitting pretty good and tried to buy the 5 and 9 to get the board covered quicker – maybe not smart but dice were coming out perfectly, looking good in the air and game flowing at good pace. im maybe 12 or so throws in on this roll and i throw out $60 and ask to buy the 5 and 9 at $30 each only. my dealer looks at me like i have 2 heads. he asks me if i want to place it. i repeat that id like to buy them. he asks the boxman if i can do that, she asks if i want to place them, i repeat that id like to buy them. she then calls over the pit boss. he asks me what im trying to do. i repeat what im trying to do. he asks me why i would want to do that. by this time i give up and ask for my bet back and just go up with another come bet. quick note – its like 4am and i have the table to myself so im not worried about slowing the game down since the table is mine but i didnt feel like explaining why i thought it was a better bet for me than placing, etc.
can u not buy 5/9 in vegas? did i state my intentions incorrectly? did i get to a table where no one had ever seen this?
im normally a come better and periodically will place the 6/8 if i have only the outside covered so far. gotta admit though, i dont think ive ever seen anyone buy the 5/9.
thx in advance.

will allow me to buy it.
Use to do it all the time in Tunica but since I now live in Los Angeles never get to Tunica, but only to Vegas.
I don’t remember the numbers but you don’t want to buy 5-9 at the $5 level though. Maybe some one will add the level where it makes sense. Remember to make buy bets for even numbers. It also makes a difference as to wether the vig is paid up front or only when you collect, which can vary by casino.

There are other articles in the wisdom pages about placing the 5 and 9. You may want to look for those and read them as well.

"MIDNIGHT" wrote: To make it simple for you, it is not a good move to bet on the five and nine unless it is a come bet. However, if you want to buy the five and nine, it must be in an even amount where the vig is collected on Wins only. Then you are better off buying it rather than placing it. The problem is 99% of the casinos in the United States that I have visited collect the vig upfront and on the wins Which makes it a terrible back.
being that vegas in win only vig, does a $30 on 5 and 9 not have a house edge close to that of a $25 buy on the 4 and 10?
and is it possible that u can not buy the 5 and 9 in vegas?

While we are on the subject of buying numbers, to the best of our memory, in Atlantic City you can buy the 4 and 10 for $35 but the vig is paid up front but not on a win only. But for $35 it is supposed to be a decent wager but not as good as going through the come line and taking odds.
However we are 98% come betters.

care to elaborate on why u say this?
while i would agree its not better than a come with full odds but doesn’t a $30 buy on 5 and 9 have a house edge close to that of a $25 buy on the 4 and 10? and we are only talking about buys with commission paid on wins only.
thx for all the input so far.

I don’t claim to be a math expert in computing the various house vigs on different bets, but I do have complete faith in what the people on the message board have to say. They much more knowledgeable about this information. I think we both agree that buying the 4 an 10 for $25 with the vig of $1 with the $1 paid on wins only is a good bet. It is close to placing the 6 and 8. Buying the 5 and 9 for $1 (paid on wins only) for $35 is a good bet but to my knowledge it is available only in Tunica. See Skinny’s post about buying the 5 and 9 as mentions in his post. Think it will answer most of your questions.
Love your interest in posting on the GTC message board. Rose and I look forward to seeing you in the casino soon.

A buy bet on the 5/9 – and as far as I know can only be dune in Tunica) is BETTER than placing the 6/8 when you pay the vig after it hits.
Buy 5/9 for $30 with Commission paid on Win only:
Commission of $1, HA would be 1.33%
H/A on the place bet of the 6/8 = 1.5%
Buy the 5/9 is a better bet!
Buy 4/10 for $30 with Commission paid on WIN only
Commission of $1 (almost every casino I know will let you buy the 4/10 for $30 for a $1 commission) = 1.33%
Again a BETTER bet than placing the 6/8
Conclusion:
A buy bet on the 5/9 or 4/10 when the commission is paid after a win is a better than than placing the 6/8. Buy bets and comebets with odds are the best bets you can make. I guess Billy, Daryl, and I need to think of a better way to say all this at our seminars so everyone understands.
On the casino personnel not knowing about the buy of the 5/9 – Just shows you how STUPID they are!

Then there’s the Put bet. This bet is better than a Place Bet when 2 conditions occur:
1) the casino offers 30x odds or higher (I have friends that bet max odds at 100x, so I pointed this out to them. But I’m talking about $500 to $10,000 odds bets.)
2) your Odds bet on a Come Bet just came down.
The HA on the flat portion of the Put Bet is:
– 33% on the 4/10
– 20% on the 5/9
– 9.09% on the 6/8.
Huge HA, right? Let’s compare a $10 Put Bet and $1000 odds with a $1010 Place/Buy bet.
– 4/10 pays $2010 on the Put, pays $1,919 on the Buy.
– 5/9 pays $1510 on the Put, pays $1414 on the Place.
– 6/8 pays $1210 on the Put, pays $1178 on the Place.
Now, when the bets are $8000 to $10,000, you can see the Put Bet can pay $1000 more than a Place/Buy bet. Technically, a Put Bet gets better than a Place bet when you have 20x odds or better.
If you do this, you will need to keep a Come Bet going, and increase the Come Bet if you’re odds bet exceeds the casino limit for your current Come Bet. In this scenario, the Put Bet is temporary until your Come Bet moves up. Otherwise, you will have to replace the Put Bet when that number is rolled, in order to keep your odds bet going.
Again, this is only worth doing if you or your friends are betting thousands of dollars in 20x odds or higher. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend it.
