Craps

Back to basics

Spread the love

Recently Rose and Doc have been having some trouble with our throw. We had too many throws where one or more of the dice had a wobble and / or one dice was leading or too high. We knew it was a grip problem but could not seem to come up with a solution. Even with these problems we did have a few good rolls but way too many short ones.

So we did the unthinkable πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ We got out our new gripper–the one made by Greenskeeper and being offered by Dom. It is the one with the mirror included so that you can really see your grip—fingers straight over the dice, fingers lined up even on the front of the dice and of course you can see that your thumb is centered. Of course we are most fortunate in that each of us lives with and is married to an instructor!!!

Using the new gripper and with our in house instructor looking at each of our throws, in a very short time we were able to see a great deal of improvement. No chips used, as we only wanted to see the results in the air, as the dice landed, hit the back wall and stopped. We used to practice to use the grip a little but now it is a very important and time consuming part of our practice routine.

We are reminded of the story of the young man from a small farming town in West Texas getting a scholarship to college–the first in the family to ever go to college. His long time farming dad was visiting with his son at the train station, and as the boy boarded the train, the old farmer said "don’t forget where you come from!!"

On our journey to becoming the advantage player we want to be, we too need to remember where we come from!! And we all came from our very first Primer Class where we were taught the basics–a great deal of that was the grip. So members of this forum, remember where you "come from" and return home from time to time for a refresher course, tune up, elite video, or advanced course. You will always be welcome home with open arms.

FROM Rose, Doc and we are sure that all the GTC instructional staff would agree.

PS–Only a little over 3 weeks to the AC class. Hope to see many of you there.

LOVE this topic!

It is always good to go back to basics and remember where you came from.

My web guy hasn’t had the time to put the new gripper on the website. , but we will. So lets keep this post on the back burner of everyone’s mind

Thanks for the post Doc. We all know how important the grip is. This reminder is fantastic. The best to you and Rose.

It also helps a lot when you have partners at the table who also happen to be instructors, like I did in Shreveport 2 weeks ago. Doc pointed out I was turning my wrist during my throw. Rose pointed out I was flicking my wrist prior to relaease.

When I made those corrections, the results were large, even on 14’ tables.

In my relatively short experience with craps and casinos, I have found that the varying table conditions introduce unintended changes to my throw. Yes, we need to adapt to the table, but I found, when I return home, I must use my GTC throwing and receiving stations to get my throw back to the GTC standard I learned from the excellent instructors at the March 2017 (Shreveport) and July 2017 (Las Vegas) classes.

It is hard for me to explain how much my time at the table with Doc and Rose expanded my understanding of the grip and throw, giving me a toolbox of techniques to conquer the variety of casino tables and layouts.

I still make revisions to correct my grip and throw, based on what I saw those two masters of craps. Of course, it was mostly from what I saw Rose do, since she was Stick Right with me, a lefty like myself.

Just last week, I was trying to decide what to do to make sure my dice were horizontally aligned in parallel with the table at the start of my swing. My starting wrist position was from a bent, 90 degree position relative to my arm – my fingers were pointing to my right hovering above the table. But, by not flicking my wrist, I had to lock my wrist, which meant my wrist had to stay in an awkward and uncomfortable position when the dice left my grip – my arm would be out and level with my shoulders, but my fingers would have to be pointing down to the floor. It was a struggle getting my wrist to cooperate like this, consistently.

Pondering this problem, it came to me (while praying, of course, as Preacher is prone to do) that Rose would start her throw with her fingers pointing down towards the table, with her wrist in a natural position as when reaching out to pick something up. That was the answer to my wrist problems! It removed any need to flick my wrist and removed the awkward position of my wrist at the end of my throw. The results were a significant improvement.

Then, last week, I could see that my dice were not usually landing at the same time, causing occasional flipping to an unwanted 6 or 1. After some analysis, I determined it was not caused by my wrist turning, nor by arm swing, nor by grip. It was happening because my starting dice position was not horizontal relative to the table.

I thought to myself, β€œWhat does Rose do to make sure her dice start parallel to the table?” Then I had a vision, like slow motion replay in my mind, remembering that just before Rose would start her swing, she would touch her dice edges to the table – VoilΓ . That’s how Rose prevented her having the problem I was having! I remembered seeing that and thinking, β€œWhy does she do that?” Ha, now I know.

I now get 30+, sometimes 40+, rolls. The journey continues. It’s so great to have friends who have already figured most of this out.

You are correct about one thing—Rose does make me a better man—not only at the craps table but in life as well.

I will indulge myself a little here—yesterday was our 52nd wedding anniversary. Am I a most fortunate man or what. You bet I am.

Hi to all dice enthusiast.
There is a section on the message board titled Life on the home front. I believe this is where we should post our congratulatory comments.

Catch you later!

Most of this post has to do with getting back to basics – the grip. It is a great topic. At one point Pat indulged himself and mentioned his 52nd anniversary – a great accomplishment that I still can’t believe that Rose has put up with him all those years πŸ˜†

With all respect – I am the administrator of this site – and I alone will make a determination on if a post or response shouldn’t belong. Granted if the original post had to do with the anniversary, but this post didn’t.

Wishing this great crap shooting couple good wishes especially when Pat started this great post IMHO is showing respect and admiration for them.

I have to say that your tip Pat on the grip has really gotten me back to taking a much needed look at my own grip. I did find some changes that were necessary and it shows improvement in my toss. It is so easy to figure that you have it down after so much practice but we all know how little it takes to be off. I have time to practice but I can be practicing the wrong grip if I don’t go back and review. Thanks again for the reminder.

I read through this and come to this thought the basics are easy if you always practice then, if you get away from them wow watch out when a bad habit creeps in it will be hell to pay to fix it.

Doc and Rose= Honor Loyalty and Truth, the basics of life.
