Rules For Bringing In More Than $10,000

Spread the love

Hello GTC, just wondering what are the rules for Canadians bringing into the US more the $10,000 limit at the border. I know that any amount up to $10,000 is fine as long as you declare it. My question is what happens if you bring in more? Is there a tax on the amount over $10,000? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I’m not sure — I think as long as you declare the amount, you should be fine

Google the Law — that should help you

Here’s a tip — bring in $9,900 — and you won’t have to deal with the hassle(s)

No tax on money coming in from Canada but if a Canadian has any winnings they should file a US non resident income tax return, even though they don’t have to include gambling winnings in Canada.

Cmcierra,

This rule does affect me as I live in Mexico and travel back to the USA a couple of times per year. I am a US citizen though so my answer will not be specifically for Canadian citizens. Here is my understanding of it from my previous research.

You can bring more than $10,000 into the USA with no tax or penalty. You just need to report it. If you don’t report it they will fine you or even confiscate your money. Also, remember that if you are coming with your wife or a friend (the law says someone else known to you) then you can only bring less than $10,000 BETWEEN you or you need to report it.

"If you bring in currency or monetary instruments that require reporting, fill out the Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments, form FinCEN 105. The form is available as a downloadable document from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (cbp.gov), or you can pick up and fill in the form and submit it to a U.S. Customs Border Protection officer before you enter the country."

I usually come into the USA with minimal dollars and then go straight to my USA bank to get money and reverse this on my way out so I have never had to report my money at the border. What I am trying to say is that I have never tested this law or filled out the form for $10,000 or over.

I think I am getting to that point though so may need to find out how casino credit works with all of this. They must have some pretty high rollers from other countries that use casino credit.

MAKE SURE you do a lot more research on this and just don’t take my word for it. I am by no means an expert on this and laws are always being changed so just when you think you understand something, you don’t! 😉

My casino of choice is in Windsor, ON and I live in the US so I make many trips across the border. Even though the law says you don’t have to declare anything under $10000 the doesn’t stop the customs agent from asking, "How much money are you bringing in?". One night I brought in $1500 and told him and that lead to other questions and a long stop. So I decided that any thing over $800 gets left in a front account at the casino. I don’t want the hassle.

Hi Rich, my concern is bringing more than $10,000 across the US border. Last visit I made to Vegas, I brought exactly $10,000 because I didn’t want any problems crossing over at customs. I don’t know what the law states as far as bringing in more than this. This is what I would like to find out.

Just googled the information in regards to moving large currency across the Canadian/ US border. The law states any currency over $10,000 must be reported to custom officials. This is to prevent the possibility of money laundering and moving large sums of cash over the border.
Thanks for the response Rich. Next time you plan on playing in Windsor, e-mail me off board.

A couple of suggestions. Anyone please respond

CM: Have you every thought about Casino Credit to link to a US $$$ account at any of our banks. If you leave the Min amount in the US $$ account, there is no service. I have one at TD. Than on need to take large US $$ with you.
I assume you go to the same casino ( or chain) in Vegas each time. Can anyone on the board know if you setup a line at one casino. is it good at any other in the same chain??

Rich: You can do the same above at Windsor, or open a Can $$ bank account at one or the banks in the downtown are ( about 2-3 blocks from Caesar’s). Let them know how much you would need from the bank ATM machine (No charge if you have any account) if you plan to come after hours.

CC Roller,

At Ceasers, at least in Vegas, you have to apply for a credit line in each separate casino, it is not a Ceasers line of credit.

I have not seen any casino share credit lines. You need to set up separate lines of credit at each casino whether they are part of the same chain or not.

Even though casinos are part of a chain each one runs independently. They have separate management, objectives and bottom lines.

CCRoller suggested having a US account on the Canadian side linked to a casino credit account and doing a money transfer directly to the casino, if I’m reading this correctly. Would the casino be able to do a credit check on the US account in a Canadian bank?

Any thoughts?

CM

Yes the casino can credit check on your US $$ account here in Canada.

You can transfer funds to the casino or better way. Set up a line of credit at the casino you are going to (See their web-site). They will do a credit check. When at the tables – ask for a draw of XX $$ . when finished pay back the XX $ and bring home the winnings. If you do not have a plus trip , the casino will debit your US $ bank account in approx. 2 weeks.

Hope this works for you.
