Out of position

Spread the love

If you are a known DI but are at the table with other DI do you throw if you are not in the position you usually throw from?

How many, if any DI have a known advantage from anywhere at a table?

Should you be playing at all if you are not in your best position?

I practice from SL2 on my 12′ table. That is my sweet spot. That give me the latitude to play on 12′ tables with friends who shoot SL1. My next spot I worked on was SL3 on my 12′ as we’ve started group play locally and I’ve needed to now shoot from SL2 on 14′. I’ve proven that I can indeed shoot really well from there with recent 35 and 28 roll hands.

On the (-) side, and Bob will vouch, I played SL3 on 14′ in CT and just heard a big sucking sound. I hadn’t practiced nor understood what I needed to do from there. On the other side, even though whenever I SO at home I bring the dice back with a roll from SR2. I did have a 30+ roll hand at home ONCE from that position, but I don’t have the practice and stat’s to prove that I have any edge. My attempts in live play at SR have failed, usually just trying to play a line bet coupon and run. Until I can prove my edge from other positions, I won’t shoot. If my position doesn’t open up and I’m alone, I’ll leave.

I’ve seen others shoot really well from many spots, but only a few, and have only witnessed Dom do it from several positions. Have seen a few folks have good rolls from out of position, but IMHO it’s going to be far less than from their sweet spots and likely a net loss.

I’m going to work on expanding my edge in multiple positions, but right now, it’s limited to 2.5 positions.

If you shot from more than one spot have you mastered the one spot before trying to find another shot?

Definition of a mastered shot by my standards able to hit 4 inch bowl with both dice about 70 percent of the time, able to move that bowl 2 or 3 inches and still hit it in case some one puts there chips in your landing zone, feel the dice pulling out of your hand, and then there is the on axis 75% plus both dice.

But then most of the time if people are shooting from more than one spot they are there to play and have fun and that is just fine to.

I agree with Brothelman, only move to another position if you’ve got one mastered. But, if you are playing with someone who is out of position, shouldn’t they then be considered random rollers?

Great post and some great answers to the thread!

I have shot from different positions, but I have not shot at those positions until I have calculated my edge at those positions knowing that I have an edge at those positions. But here is the key for me and others as well. I will never shoot from those other positions if I am playing alone. If I am alone and my preferred spot is taken I will not play even though some of these other positions are open.

Just because I have gone to a casino to shoot craps doesn’t mean I HAVE TO SHOOT Craps! My advantage is much smaller at these other positions. I only do it when I am with many of my friends.

Remember that when you go to a casino alone and your practiced spot is not open and you don’t play, you can truly call yourself and ADVANTAGE PLAYER!

Like Dom I only shoot with close friends when I shoot out of position. I am reasonably successful from the end or even the left hook closest to the dealer.
These people are advantage shooters so that helps. Many times only a half table is open. If not with our group when my spot is not open I head for greener pastures.

I have only been playing at Vegas or Laughlin the last three years, and if my spot in not available at one casino, there is another nearby so I do not play out of position when I’m by myself.

Rose and Doc discussed this thread and basically we do not throw from any place but SL1 or 2 or (Rose a lefty) from SR 1 or 2—period with no exceptions. If one one side is open the other will go block or there is always some full pay VP or Pow Gai to play for low stakes. The PG game has a very low house edge and it is a slow game with a full table.

If we come on a table with GTC people that we know and recognize at the prime positions we will happily take a position at another spot at the table and / or block and pass the dice.

ACPA good hear from you and see you posting. Hope we can see you and Mrs. ACPA at the casino soon.

Some days it’s nice to let team members do it and I can relax and drink a few cold ones

I can kind of get ok results from straight out on the dealer’s side. You’re throwing down the boxes, and unless you have darkside lurkers on the other end, there’s often a pretty substantial landing zone. The throw is all awkward, though, and you have to land it so softly, so it’s not worth pursuing seriously. I might do it if I’d already won money and wanted to hang out for a bit.

I had one of those where I hit a truly ridiculous amount of craps. You’re the poor people’s hero when you do that. It was fun as hell.
