Craps

Doc took a golf lesson

Spread the love

As you will soon understand, this post is where it should be— in the Craps section of the GTC board.

My golf game has been in the toilet for too long so I decided I a needed some instruction from a pro. Found a young lady who had a great college career playing golf and is an LPGA certified instructor. Very knowledgeable with a great attitude and not a wise a** like some of the male pros I have used in the past.

Told her I did not want to totally remake my game but just wanted a couple of suggestions so that I could be a bit more competitive. At my age a total make over is out of the question. I know that, like craps, too many suggestions at one time can really screw you up. So here is what she did for me.

1. First of all we talked about stance. Feet about shoulder width apart—and there wasn’t even a craps table in front of me. Bend straight forward at the waist. Keep your knees slightly bent. I should pick a target and set my shoulders so that they pointed toward the target. Thought No Field Five was giving me some craps instruction. Place the ball in front of my belt buckle–under my nose??? How many times have I told students to do the same thing.

2. Swing—on the back swing I was coming back way to far and coming inside—OMG was the Dominator giving me a lesson??? And of course I was not coming straight forward. Still could not see a craps table anywhere.

3. Grip—next she wanted to make a few "minor" adjustments to my Grip—and believe it or not, Finesse was no where to be found on the driving range. My grip was too tight, I needed to use my fingers more (with a grip that was not too tight) and use the palm of my hands less, she suggested a grip with an overlapping finger, all of this so that the hands would work together better.

4. Follow through–be sure to reach for the target.

There were a few other minor adjustments that concern golf only and not craps as we teach it. It will take awhile to work these things into my game but it certainly boosted my confidence.

Now everyone reading this post will understand why Old Doc posted this on the craps section of the message board.

Maybe in a short time I will be able to break 100—used to shoot in the low 90’s and high 80’s for respectable game . I hope to take some lessons from time to time to remain competitive.

It is truly amazing how the game of golf has so many similarities to what we teach in the GTC class.

Lastly If anyone wants to take their craps game /advantage play to the next level, with the BLACK FRIDAY specials that Dom is offering, now is the time to lock in a price for a primer, refresher, advanced, tune up or elite video. I know I learned a little something concerning my golf game. You can do the same for you advantage play. I was almost ready to quit golf—as I didn’t think it was worth it any more. I know of many former students who have dropped out of the GTC concepts, simply because they need a minor adjustment and don’t know it. They incorrectly think the GTC throw simply doesn’t work. They are so wrong. A small investment will pay great dividends. So if your craps game is not going as well as you might like, the best way ( and in my humble opinion the only way) to see improvement and be a winner is to come to a GTC class weekend and invest in some instruction. There will be 6 this year so one should be near you.

We can always improve ourselves and make life more enjoyable and successful!

🙂 Love the analogies and the comparisons.

Great post and I know you golf game will improve …. you don’t need to improve your craps game as that is at the top!

Doc,

Thanks for this great post. I remember when I started my dice control journey and I was at my first class listening to the lecture all I heard was the gold pro from my local club talking.

Feet shoulder width apart.
Center the ball on your body, this is basic, keep it simple.
Bend at the waist, relax legs.
Don’t strangle the club, keep your grip firm but soft.
Slow down that backswing and don’t make it so long. Slower, Slower !!!!!
Tempo now with your delivery, slow and steady, Tempo.
Finish the swing(delivery) follow thru, throw the club head at the target.

The similarities between, Craps, golf, bowling, baseball are all the same. The basics never change.

Craps is a physical game just like all the other sports except we keep score with $$$$$$.

Doc,

Craps is always better than hitting your balls with a club.

OMC,

The only 2 good balls that I was was when I stepped on the rack in the sand trap.

Doc, thanks for posting. A lot of the same principles work for other "sports", like darts. What I find interesting is that most of the checkpoints all take place before any motion occurs, square stance grip, visualize target.
