Craps

Why doesn't anyone EVER discuss the importance of getting your GRIP right on this forum?!

Spread the love

😳 😀 😯 🙄

Yes, it FINALLY got through to me this morning. I’ve been frustrated of late with my results. Decent SRR but no long rolls to speak of, in practice or live. Then this morning, I thought to myself, "Self? Why don’t you look at your grip? It’s the number one topic on the forum." And I answered back, "Self, your grip is fine, it’s your throw". And I argued back "Self, TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR GRIP!". So I did. And guess what? My grip was fine! OK, no it wasn’t. My ring finger was deeper than the others….. "Self! You’re a hard-headed idiot!" "Self, You’re right!"

So I’ve been looking at my grip prior to every toss today. I’m not feeling the finger in the wrong place, but it is wrong almost every time. So as SO MANY have reiterated on here from posts and answers from Finesse, Skinny, Doc, BigDaddy, and everyone else…. LOOK AT YOUR GRIP and get used to how it’s supposed to feel on each and every throw. I’ve now thrown 29, 15, 12, 20 for a gain of $1,462 using TBS + 6/8 place, so that says I’m hitting the numbers. Now to get the feel down without having to look at it.

Lots of work to keep on top of to get this corrected. Can’t wait to shoot AC this weekend, SBC for the class, and Northeast gang next month. Good shooting to all, and LOOK AT YOUR GRIP!!! (That’s more for me than anyone else).

HARK!!! I do believe a light has turned on just above your head. Just kidding.

Yes the grip is important since it it the beginning of the throw and the only time that you have 100% over what is happening–good or bad. Once the dice leave your fingers the physical laws of nature take over.

Thank you for posting this as many will have this concept put back into their heads.

Remember there is always room for improvement in all of us. I know seem to need a little help, but I have Rose here to always look at me throwing the dice in practice. These small things can creep into outrthrow so keep up the excellent self critique.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Yes Doc, 💡 The light bulb was there and exploded when it lit up! With all of the discussions, I just refused to think my issue was the grip, or at least part of it. The throw can never compensate for a bad grip, can it? 💡

Thanks again to you and Rose and everyone who TRIES to drive that home. Some of us just take longer!

Good Luck in AC

Shoot at the furthest place south on the Boardwalk

Be careful at the place near the pier with the expensive shops

The grip. I check my grip every time I pick up the dice. I set the dice with the 4’s on top and the 5’s facing me for the hardway set. If you do this you can see if your thumb is centered correctly on the die with the 5’s facing you. Then with the three finger GTC grip, the index and ring finger extends slightly past the die and you can line up the depth of your three fingers with the pips each of each die (5’s ) facing you.
This gives you a quick visual check of your grip with a centered thumb placement and the fingers in a straight line on the back. With this set the 3V and 2V are each just a one face turn to achieve, quick and easy. It all starts with a good grip.
Good Luck, it is a great day to throw the dice.

I agree with you about the importance of just practicing the grip. I probably don’t do it enough, but I check my grip almost every time in practice and make sure that what I am feeling is the grip I need to have once I check it visually on both sides of the dice. Every now and then I have to adjust what my thumb is doing because it isn’t going straight down on the dice like my 3 front fingers.
If we don’t get the grip damn near perfect every time, I am convinced that we will not have consistency with long rolls!

Hard Nine–love this thread. I am hoping you re asking this question with tongue in cheek–as I have seen discussions on the grip many times. With that said, as you say it is one of, if not the most important item for us to learn. It is certainly the first thing a primer student must fully understand and that’s why, when the primer students go into the practice room for the first session, we go see Mr. Finesses who works only on this at the first station.

Thank you for posting this.

Doc, yes/no. Tongue in cheek on the title, but not in that I was hard-headed. I just KNEW my grip was OK. Every time I read the threads and comments, I knew they weren’t applying to me, but OH YES THEY WERE!!!

With that, I just want to encourage everyone to do as you and so many others continue (and need to continue to continue) reminding all of us about practicing and looking at the grip. I thought I felt my fingers in the right spot, but my feel of right had obviously shifted and I need to get that reset in my head and fingertips.

Happy gripping and shooting!

Did someone mention GRIP!!!!!

I’m like MadBeBopper1. I have to adjust my thumb to allow equal amount of skin on the dice. I cannot place the thumb straight down like the front three fingers. Then I pray. 😀

Catch you later!

A method of checking my grip, a method I use to check m grip was taught to me by Mr. Finesse. Set the dice with the 6s facing away from you with the pips running vertically. When I take my grip I can use the sixes to check my finger alignment and the 1s to check my thumb placement. Works for me.

Take a look at posts by Mr. Finesse.

He talks about grip all the time. This post should be, Why did I not EVER realize these guys were right about the grip.

Hit for $3700 yesterday. And yes, both Dom and Mr. Finesse have schooled me on my grip to wonderful effect.

You around this afternoon?

Yes Jesse, a little tongue in cheek in the title.

Unfortunately, booked in meetings all afternoon. Hopefully next time you’re in, as I’ll have just returned from SBC class.
