Spread the love

About a month ago I expressed my desire to attend the classes in June, My wife kind of gave me a "I’ll think about it". A few days later she told me she was not interested. Usually she is the first one to want to go to Vegas but she is currently preparing for double knee replacement and until that gets done her mobility is very limited. When she saw my disappointment she mumbled "but you can go if you want." I wasn’t sure if she was serious so I asked. She counters with "but I think you should take a short trip on your own first." Now, since I had the stroke in 2012 she has accompanied me on every trip that I have taken and I thought, she has a good point. I could probably use a short trip to assure myself that I can do this on my own and a little tune-up prior to Vegas wouldn’t hurt.

So I planned a short 2 day trip to AC. The rules we agreed on were. I had to do all the car prep, pack my own bag, load the car and drive myself to AC. Sounds simple enough. So I put together a plan, booked a room and this past Tuesday drove to AC. I had my battery powered chair loaded in the back of the mini van so I wouldn’t wear myself out walking around the casino. I arrived and got checked in without incident.

The casino comp’d me a nice room with a view of the ocean/beach and a walk-in shower. I arrived hungry and as is common lately in AC most of the casual dining was closed so I rolled out to the boardwalk searching for something to eat. Found a decent cheesesteak and after getting a few hours of sun rolled back to the hotel. I spent most of what remained of the afternoon exploring the hotel and planning a way of getting to the tables from my room. Around 8pm, after a 1hr power nap, I decided it was time to throw some bones and rolled down to the tables. They have three $10 tables open but sl1 and sl1 are taken on all three tables. I decide to sit down at a slot machine since all the blackjack tables are full and I had not yet found the Pai-Gow poker table. I had a nice hit on the machine so I decided to roll back to the craps pit and check it out. Awesome! Not only is sl1 open but it’s on my favorite table.

I buy in and the dice are in front of me . I have a short 8 hand but the dice are moving fast. Soon I have them back and have a 15. On this hand I noticed my dice have a very pronounced wobble so as the dice move around the table I start thinking about my last video with no field five. I adjust my grip as I was taught and reel off a nice 23 hand. I’m on and off on the six a lot. next time I get the dice I have a great 54 hand on and off the six again and by the time I seven out I have completed a red chip fire bet and my place bet on the six is almost at the table max originally starting at $60. One heck of a tune-up for LV. Before I departed Thursday morning I had three more sessions with mixed results but most were profitable. With the slot hit and the great results at the tables I not only proved to myself that I can travel unassisted but I have also funded my trips to both LV and Shreveport along with a healthy bump to my 401G.

Please excuse this long rambling post but right now I am pumped. Thanks to all the instructors and my GTC family. You have no idea how much your kind words and encouragement have aided in my recovery.

Great trip report. Sounds like you are definitely capable of traveling on your own. Hope to see you soon.

Butcher, always good to see a good successful report. Thanks for sharing. More importantly it is great that you have improved so much that you can now travel by yourself.

While I got ya, I would like to address your wife’s up coming knee replacement surgery. I have been to that "rodeo" twice as I had both knees replaced about 10 years ago. Unlike your wife I had each knee done two year apart for several reasons. However I do know several people who have had both done at the same time with great success. Regardless of how one has it done here is some advice for her–please share with her. This is almost a routine procedure and she should do well.

1. Although they "kinda" take the knee apart to do the surgery, when she wakes up the leg will be stronger that it was prior to surgery. With a walker she will be able to walk the same day–slowly but she will be moving.

2. Often times after the surgery, the pain is less than prior–I know that was the case with both of my knees.

3. The most important part of the process is the rehab. Take as much rehab as possible for as long as possible. I know this sounds redundant but rehab is the key to knee and hip replacement surgery. Tell her that the improvement will seem slow but the improvement will be there after each rehab visit so keep going. Yes there will be some discomfort during rehab but in the long run it will be worth it. The more rehab the more complete the recovery. Another way to way to say this—improvement can be measured in 1/16th of an inch–very little each time but be patient as it is well worth it.

I know that without the surgery I would be in great pain, hardly able to walk and probably in a wheel chair.

Finally, right after the June class in Vegas next month, I will have my right hip replaced and believe it or not, while not exactly looking forward to this "appointment," having been down this road before, I am looking forward to getting this behind me. She will feel the same when it is all over.

Tell her wish her the best of luck and to contact me if she has any questions.

That was a great read…. I am often on AC… If you post the dates you will be there, next time….. If I am around I would be happy to assist you with any mobility issues, if needed

Thanks Doc. I will pass the info to her. She is going into this with some apprehension but a good attitude. She has been with me through both the motorcycle wreck and the stroke. She has been at my side through it all and she knows I will be there for her. Her doctor is very confident that this procedure will go well and will give her the mobility she wants. Again Doc thanks for the info and encouragement. I know it will mean a lot to her.

@ Dom. It was a great trip but I messed up on my good rolls especially the 54 by not increasing my odds on my pass-line and come bets as I accumulated wins.

I guess I’m still in the $5 table mind set. They offer 5x odds and I stayed at 3x throughout the roll. I did press the place bet on the six by "up a unit" then press/pull after the seventh hit. I completed a six point fire-bet with a red chip for me and two whites for the crew. I don’t play the fire bet very often but I felt like gambling a bit and it worked out this time. The crew was very happy as were the other three players who had a white chip on it. I also had a red on the hard 4 going for "the big enchilada" but after the third hit they wouldn’t let me parlay the total and I had to take it down to the table max. Good thing because I sevened out before throwing another hard 4. It was a great session. See you in June.

@ Scan Next time I head to AC I will send you a pm with my cell #. I don’t get to play with other GTC’rs very often.
