Tipping the shooter …

Spread the love

While I haven’t not been able to not bet on other shooters, or employing the 5 count all the time like I should, I have gotten better with not betting 3 or 4 numbers on the other shooters and trying to just do 1 number with pass line & feature bet … then to get more after five count or more, go up with a come bet, and place that number after the come bet wins … This worked really well a couple months back as someone repeated my beginning number 14 times, which made me a lot of money, and I was up, so I tipped them for their troubles.

Now, last night I was playing. A CF was throwing again. They did hit my numbers a couple times, as well as the Small/All/Tall bet, which I had for $1 each … not a big score, but put me up past my buy in a little. As I wasn’t up a good amount, and quite frankly wasn’t thinking too much about it, I did not tip the shooter. Well, I got the dice, and that CF ended up betting the don’t pass on me, and with each toss of the dice, kept increasing his don’t odd’s. Alas, after about 12 numbers, and the shot before he stuck his hands out as I was getting ready to shoot, big ugly came out to get the better of me, and the person left.

After a little bit of time, on of the other regulars that was on that end of the table came over and told me that the gentlemen was PO because I made ‘all that money’ on his throw, and didn’t bother to give him a tip. To which I replied, "Oh well. If I would have made a lot more, and would have been up more, maybe I would have, and how many times do we play, have good rolls where someone makes a lot, but never tips us."

So, it makes me wonder. Has anyone else been in that situation before. I always tip the dealers, because quite frankly, and I feel like I do get some leeway when it comes to not hitting the back wall, not that I try not to, but it does happen. But, I don’t always tip the shooter, unless I am up double or more than my buy in …. what’s your thoughts?????

I have never outright tipped a shooter, as in, at the end of the roll send some chips his way. I will make bets for the shooter, usually a hardway bet if the shooter is having a good run (or is a cutie.) I feel a hardway bet is simplest because you can just tell the stick. If the shooter wins the bet the stick will make a point of pointing out I made the bet. The shooter will thank me, I will thank the shooter back for making me money.

I have had two occasions where the shooter got upset when they won a bet I made for them. They refused the money. One guy even yelled at me.

There are some ladies who I play craps with at times. They call themselves Charlie’s Angels. (They started calling themselves that, not me.) If they are having a good run I will make more frequent bets for them (gotta take care of my Angels.) In that case it is usually placing or increasing box numbers for them. That is easier because they are on the same side of the table as me.

I have never tipped a shooter, and I have never expected to be tipped. That is ridiculous thinking.

Have I ever been tipped? Yes a few times. I graciously accept the tip and usually give it to the dealers if they have been good.

I can’t believe that guy actually stuck his arm out and hit the dice. What a moron.

Interesting post. A couple of stories that actually happened.

1. Was at a table that had the Small, Tall and All. A player at the end of the table had the bet up for $10 each. I did not. Made all three bets and the player at the end of the table made good money in addition to the money on a good roll. He said "thank you very loudly." I jokingly replied how about a small tip for the shooter. He threw me a $25 chip. I said thank you and tried to give the tip back but he insisted.

A little while later he got the dice and I bet the STA, more of a courtesy, since he had tipped me. Believe it or not he make the STA as well, so I made money. I tipped him back the $25 chip and the table got a good laugh. It was a fun time at the table.

2. Was play at a table when a GTC friend got the dice. Before he could throw out his first roll, a drunk player and his buddy–let’s just say they were more that just friends–bought in. He managed to throw out 3 brown chips–$5000 each. The dealer made the change. He was so far gone that his buddy had to pick up the chips and put them in the rack. This idiot started making hard way bets some in the $200 to $300 range. The GTC shooter hit a couple and the drunk yelled out "I love you man" and threw him a tip. The GTC shooter picked up the chip and it was a $500 chip. The chip did not go in the chip rail but in his pocket. This happened twice before his 7 out.

He left the table and cashed in the the two $500 chips. By the way the drunk lost all of his money and left the table. He will never know that happened or where his money went.

There was a whale at a local casino in Vegas. He had a black chip on each of the hard way bets. When ever a shooter hit a hard way he tipped them two green chips. Butch and lefty played with him often. We knew every time we hit a hard way we would get two green chips. He made a lot of money. So did we. it almost felt like we were taking advantage of him. NAH.

Last summer I was playing at the most beautiful hotel in AC. I was standing sr1 as usual. Went on to throw around 40 numbers. The guy to my right was betting $5000 chips on the place bets and $500 on the hard ways. After I hit 3 hard ways, he bet a black chip on each of the hard ways for me and placed my point for $200. I hit a few and was incredibly appreciative towards him. I made about $4000 off of his bets. He made around $250,000. That’s the most I was ever tipped at once. I loved it. I am all for it although I don’t do it to other players. I rather tip the dealers then the players. Just my 2 sense.

Isn’t there a table limit on bets? Was this dude exempted?

I don’t want a tip but I do through out a 10 dollar hard way for the shooter if the shooter is friend or family and the roll has progressed for a while. I control it, if they hit it, I parley it. Ronald hit it twice and he pulled it without my permission. Goldfinger hit it one night and he did not know I bet it for him. Sometimes he turns his hearing aids off. LOL

7 X 7
Limit 5 k for max bet,
5k place, 5k come, 5k odds etc, Maybe more per number if is 5k, I believe. Is this correct, Midnight ?

In most casinos I have seen in AC, limits are:

$5,000 – place bets on outside numbers.
$6,000 – place bet on 6 or 8.
$2,000 – pass, come, don’t pass & don’t come with $10,000 in odds at 5X tables. Not sure if they allow $12,500 in odds on the 6/8 or not since you could take $12,500 in odds with a $1,500 pass/come bet.

Prop bets have max payout of $15,000.

I had a great roll in Vegas earlier this month. I hit 5 consecutive hard eights, and the guy next to me had pressed up to $100. He made a ton on money off my throw, but gave me nothing (mind you I expected nothing). I was SR 1 – the guy SL1 threw me $10 every time I hit a point. I said thank you and would make a hard way bet. It was a fun roll – nice to hit the hard ways with money riding on them, and nice to get thrown money when you hit a point.

I have to say I have not tipped a shooter, but would consider it in the future.

I still occasionally make bets for players but it depends on the player. I shy away from it because I’ve seen players focus so much on hitting the Hardway tip that it changes the whole rhythm of the roll. I still do it on occasion.

A guy just tipped me a black chip this week. I hit 9 hardways out of a 34 number roll. I hit 4 hard 8’s, 3 hard 4’s. A hard 10 n a hard 6. I only got paid on the hard 8. I hit it for $30, went to $80 n hit it, went to $150 n hit the 8 soft. Put another hundred on it n hit it, went to $300 n rolled it soft. Put another $100 up n hit it. I made like 3 racks off the roll n still kept the tip. I think I made double what the tipper made. All my come bets had $1 with $3/odds for the dealers. I was betting like that for them all night n probably made them between 2-3 bills.

Now skinny, say I hit the hard 8 for $300 n I’m feeling good n go to a G. If I hit that one, you don’t think they would let me press to $2,000 for an $18,000 payout?

Posted by: Skinny on February 17, 2015, 7:53 am

Not likely. As I said before $15,000 is the max payout on prop bets. $1,667 is the most you want to put on the hard 6 or hard 8, $2,143 on the hard 4 or hard 10.

But just ask them what the max payout is on prop bets because it can vary. $15,000 is the most common number I have seen. It has been different in a few casinos but mostly at their higher limit tables, ie. $100 or higher minimum tables.

Posted by: MIDNIGHT on February 17, 2015, 4:16 pm

Skinny is correct. They would pay you $15,000 on a $2000 hard 6 or 8. The only difference I know of is they allow $2,000 max pass line bet with a full 10x odds for $20,000. It’s a mid Boardwalk casino.

Furthermore, I know some casinos will allow higher Max bets if the player speaks to the casino manager prior to play and arrange It. I don’t know if this was the case for this guy because he never went above the $5k or $6k place bets.

Posted by: Butcher on February 17, 2015, 8:54 pm

I’ve never tipped anyone but I have been tipped. I usually give some or all of it to the dealers. In one instance a player tipped me two green chips, next time I got the dice I put them both on the hard 6, one for both of us, a result I had thrown several times on previous hands. I hit it and we both took our win each giving the crew one green. Usually I only tip the crew.

You just reminded me of something I wanted to emphasize because it is not understood by many players.

The placard on the table that says Maximum wager only applies to Pass/Come/Don’t Pass and Don’t Come wagers. The maximum on place bets and prop bets is completely different.

Most tables in AC say $2,000 Maximum. But as I said that only is for line wagers. Place bets at a $2K Max table normally has $5K on 4/5/9/10 and $6K on 6/8 as the standard maximum wager allowed on place bets.

The guy you played with probably did not have any special arrangements made since it does not sound like he went above the standard maximums.

Can the floor super or the Pit Boss make that decision to allow you to extend the limits. Say $2,000 on the hard 8? If they said only $1,667 I would consider that a good problem. I would have had to hit quite a few but just in case I ever find myself in that situation.

Posted by: Skinny on February 17, 2015, 9:39 pm

You normally have to make those arrangements before you start playing. They typically want to avoid the exact situation you are describing. They do not want to be exposed to someone who gets hot and then suddenly wants to make higher than maximum wagers. At least that is what I was told by one pit boss when I asked him the question.

Their thinking is that if you want and have the bankroll to support a higher limit game you are going to play at that level for the entire game. You are playing the same game as the lower limit player using different colored chips.

So the answer is normally I do not believe a pit boss or supervisor can raise the maximums in the middle of a game. Also, if they did have that power it is unlikely they would do it in the middle of a game. Rather they would do so when you first came to the table and asked for higher maximums.

They probably won’t say that $1,667 is the maximum because most of them have never seen it and it is not a normal situation they come up with. I doubt they know what pays $15,000 on the different prop bets. More than likely they would tell you that the maximum they will pay is $15,000 and if you wager $2,000 you will still only get $15,000. It is up to you to figure out what pays $15,000 for each of the prop bets.

I have worked out the numbers for the hardway bets because I wanted to be prepared if the "problem" ever came up.

Posted by: Jumbotron Ron on February 17, 2015, 9:54 pm

I’ll still try for the 2, I’ll let you know how it goes. If not 1,667 is the number. As long as I know, they can get the calculators out if they want.

I don’t post a lot, but this one brought back a memory. When I first started to play craps,it seemed that all I could roll were 7’s…only at the wrong times, of course. I was playing on a $10 table one day with only one guy at the opposite end of the table (those of you who know me know I still have a hard time prying myself away from the end! 👿 ). He gave me $300 to throw…you guessed it…7’s. He bet the don’ts on me..and for a while I was able to 7 out – but as I remember, he was betting about $100 a roll and the pressure got to me. I started to throw numbers. I was shooting from the passline so it worked out okay in the end, but I ended up apologizing profusely and leaving – I did ask him if he wanted his money back but he didn’t take it!! It was by far my biggest tip…but also the weirdest situation I’ve been in at the table.
