BOSTON (AP) – State gambling regulators say they’ll look for ways to preserve thoroughbred horse racing in the state now that Suffolk Downs is set to close later this month.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission says it’ll focus on the impending closure of the region’s lone remaining thoroughbred horse track at its Sept. 25 meeting. The live horse racing season that ends Sept. 29 will be the track’s last after Mohegan Sun lost its bid for the lone Boston region casino license this week. Suffolk Downs says it will remain open and offer simulcast betting through at least November.

The commission says it is committed to an “extensive and sustained exploration of every available option” to preserve thoroughbred racing. It also plans to help racing employees through workforce development and identifying other employment.
