Here’s something I have been wondering about. I always try to practice on new dice and I used to discard them once they have been thrown a couple thousand throws.
But since I have so many old dice, I have been practicing on worn dice sometimes since it is not only expensive to keep getting brand new dice to use and they only last so long, but also I thought it might be good to give myself a slight handicap in my practice routine to use old and worn dice every other practice session.
My thought was if I could throw a decent SRR with worn out dice, my throw should be even better with new ones.
Now I am starting to think that this is a bad practice, and I should just get rid of the old dice and always play with new fresh dice since that is what the casino has when we play and that is what gets the best results as far as SRR is concerned.
I know that old and worn dice are much harder to throw and to grip and release together.
What’s the opinion of you folks about this?

Practicing with old dice is something that should not be done. We need sharp edges on the dice because this is what the dice are like in the casino.
Casino’s change the dice about every 6 to 8 hours. If a casino averages 65 throws per hour the dice will have approximately 500 toss’s on them and then a new set is entered into play.
When I practice I use a new set (5 in a sleeve) every 600 to 700 tosses. I stretch mine out this far because I am the only person throwing the dice and my dice are not abused. they are kept on the felt and never go off of the table or hit a wooden or glass surface.
The old dice that I have I use them for different drills that I do. These drills are to practice my target shooting or observe just the flight of the dice in the air. I do not care what the end result of the toss is.
I hope this helps.
BTW I think I have somewhere in the area of 700 old dice in buckets that I have accumulated in the 17 years that I have been doing this.

I use 2 sleeves of dice for 6000 rolls. I use one red and one of another color so I can better tell which die is which for diagnosing my throws. I always put the red dice on the right. My practice regimen is 120 rolls per session. I set the latest set aside and use another set each time till all 5 sets have been used then put them back in the bowl and start over. After 6000 rolls they are retired and are used for target practice.

Overstocked.com has dice in four different colors (red, green, blue and purple) and they are good quality. I can shave my beard with a new set. (not quite but close)
When you consider how much money we bet at the tables, $15 a month for dice is a bargin.
I like the idea of a dice coaster. Glue 16 of them together. π

I will start my practicing from now on with new dice and limit their use after 2000 throws. Then I’ll just go ahead and use them for target practice as suggested by Mr. Finesse.
Thanks for the great feedback, everyone.
