Practice Rig Question — proper distance

Spread the love

Ok — here goes

What is the proper distance from the back wall of the receiving table to the shooting spot? — 7 feet? — 7.5 feet?? — 8 feet???

Reason is……and it’s crazy

The Princess and I shoot together — I am SR-1 and she is at SR-2

Sometimes when I shoot, I "HIT" the wall straight on and also, my arm goes a tad bit past the mid-point and then the HEAT comes. I move to SR-1.5 and like magic, the shot starts working. At times, my sweet spot is SR-1.75, almost to SR-2

Well, I started thinking about it and decided to measure the Practice rig set-up in the basement

I found that my set-up of the rig has the back wall 100 inches (8 feet / 4 inches) away from the shooting spot — I’ve done well over 10,000 throws like this and it answers my question of why I’m smacking the wall so many times from SR-1

So…..please help — what is the correct distance from the back wall of the receiving station to the shooting spot?

Why worry about it when you have a distance that you are profitable from?

you may be right — it’s also to help The Princess when she shoots

I would think that 8 feet / 4 inches "may" be a bit too far

Lion, I now have a craps table but early on when I had the practice rig, I put the back wall at 90 inches. Here is my reasoning. Assuming a 12 foot table you have 144 inches. One half of that distance is 72 inches—this is very advanced math–which would be about the stick man’s belly button. I then allow 18 inches for a fat stick man and this brings me to 90 inches or 7.5 feet. If you want to practice for a 14 foot table simply move over about 12 inches (1/2 of the increase from 12 to 14 feet).

Brothelman does have a good statement–if a little further out from SL 1 is best for you don’t try to fix something that isn’t broke.

Hope that helps. If you wish to discuss further contact me off the board.

Doc — thanks for the advice

I may move (a few inches or so) the shooting table a little bit closer to the receiving table (we’ll see)

But, in the future, I think the Princess and I will switch spots in our alignment

The SR-1 spot always seemed to be too close for me anyway, so SR-1.5 or 1.75 (if that makes sense) seems to be my Sweet Spot

When you switch positions, and assuming she steps back–as taught in class–your will probably be throwing from SL 1 1/2. That should work.

One of the Casinos in AC yells & screams if I move from SR-2 to SR-1.5 — it’s ridiculous; but, we won’t be dealing with them too much longer

We usually leave that casino and go somewhere else on the boardwalk

Here is what I have told many to do and something I still do on my table:

Next time you go to your casino, go to an empty table and measure off from the back wall to your position using the heel to toe method… (you might be able to take out a retractable tape if you feel like it)…Then do the same thing at your house with your practice rig. All craps table are not the same in length even those that we say are 12 feet. It depends on the manufacturer and the wood they are using for their bed. Do this heel to toe for all the casino you play at and you will find that you will be standing at the correct disctance for THAT table
