Craps

The 5 count

Spread the love

I told Dom is post this soon apologies lots of work travel. I was at Foxwoods this past weekend with my wife enjoying a weekend of my points! I walked by a craps table and saw a guy with $25k betting $1,500-$2,500 a number $600 hard ways. My wife and I had dinner danced. I went and played 3 hrs later. Watched that same guy bet on random rollers and they were a evening out faster than I cod drink my Jameson’s on the rocks. He went from $25k living large and hooting and hollering to down $30k in less than 3hrs. I’ve actually moved the 5 count to an 8. I’ve now witnessed 5-10 people blow through upwards of $100k not using the 5 count. We all know here the hard work dedicated to preaching this. Live by it folks!!!

Kaz,

The less you bet on random rollers, the better off you will be in the long run. Develop a controlled throw and bet the most money on yourself, next bet some money on other controlled shooters you know who have a decent shot (after using the 5 or 8 count on them). Finally try to avoid betting any money at all on random rollers. Using the 5 count will save your bankroll for yourself and other controlled shooters. An 8 count is an even better way to save your bankroll. But best of all is not to bet any money on random rollers at all if you can get away with it.

I was nursing a buy in of $1K for about three hours when Phil Ivey, the world champion poker player and super smart advantage player and math guy, come up to a table and loose $300K in about 20 minutes. He was betting all the crazy prop bets and hop bets. I’m certain he was just having "fun" because he has a huge bankroll, but I was cringing with every loss.

Phil Ivey is certainly one of the best poker players in the world and arguably the number one player in the world. He plays an extremely disciplined game of poker. He knows all the odds at every moment during the development of any hand. He only makes wagers in poker that give him the best opportunity to win.

But when it comes to craps he will make the worst bets on the table and be a consistent loser over all in the game. It is mind boggling that someone who can master the more complex situations in poker totally ignores the most basic principles in craps. Of course he does not lose in craps every time he plays. He got in a game I was at once and won over $100K playing only two hands. He lost on his throw, but his buddy had a decent hand and he made back what he lost plus over $100K profit. However I have also seen him lose enough times at craps and having seen how he bets, I can say with certainty he is a long time loser at the game.

In my opinion he is just another reckless gambler at heart who happened to get lucky. He developed a skill at poker at a time when the game became very popular making it possible for him to make a lot of money. But a true advantage player only makes wagers where he has an edge. I don’t care how much money someone has, if they make bad wagers, they are just another gambler.
