Craps

right side question

Spread the love

I actually have two questions involving right side throws and being right handed. First let’s assume hip is against the rail and chest is square with the front wall. At the address, where your arm is hanging straight down, before the backswing starts, where are the dice pointing? Let us assume the hardway set with the 5’s on top, are the 5’s pointing straight down, or are the 2’s pointing to the back wall or the 2’s somewhat pointing to front wall due to cock of the wrist.
Secondly. I would like to suggest to all of the GTC administrators a class for right side right handed throwers. For whatever reason not everyone can throw left side and being right handed or don’t want to so they are sort of left out on the lurch to fend for themselves when maybe there is a GTC approved rightside throw. When I took the class rightside throws were demonstrated by Dom and Nick at Night but there was no opportunity to actually learn the proper toss. What do you think?

First, Nick is left handed. Second, I am a right handed person who prefers to throw from the right side and let me tell you how difficult it is to master. Dom and Billy have been doing this for a very very long time. Myself, when I first started with GTC, they all tried to talk me out of the right side. It took years to prove to them that I was just simply better from the right side. But we will try to talk most right handed people into throwing from stick left because it is so much more natural of a motion. It takes a toll on the body to throw from the opposite side. Take that into consideration. Hope this helps.

I am right handed and took several classes shooting from the left. I had completed the advanced class from the left. Becoming accomplished from the left after several years I found there were not enough shooters on the right amongst the folks with whom I chose to play. I wanted to learn how to shoot from the right.

Dom suggested taking a Refresher class shooting from the right side to learn the proper technique and get an opinion from the instructors as to whether I had the ability to become proficient from the right.

I received their seal of approval and even came in 2nd in the no sevens contest. That is how long ago I did this. GTC still had the no sevens contest.

Now I shoot from the right when necessary but I prefer the left. I have had several 50’s and a 70 roll from the right. But the shot from the left is easier to do.

If you are serious about shooting from the right I suggest doing something similar. There are no shortcuts to success.

Skinny does that mean GTC offers the class for right side shooters. I am not looking for any shortcuts just some professional help as to the proper technique. I prefer the left side also but in my group there are too many lefters and not many righters so I have devoted a lot of time over the past year and a half to the right side but at the same time have certainly not giving up the left. what would you advise here.
I would also like to thank Midnight for his advise also. I can certainly understand the toll the right side can take on the body but like you said I simply think I am better from that side. I forgot that Nick at Night was left handed, thank you for the correction. Professor

I will leave it to Dom to advise you about how GTC can best help you because he would be the best one to answer that question. I was not trying to say you were looking for shortcuts. I only meant to impress upon everyone that it takes dedication and effort to become proficient. It sounds like I am "preaching to the choir". But I look upon that as a good thing 🙂

Ok … here goes …..

I want to address your quote : "I simply think I am better from that side" There should be no thinking involved. You either have an edge from the right or you don’t. this can only be tested with Smart Craps and doing the math long hand. Let me say that if you don’t have an edge now, that doesn’t mean that an edge from the right for a right handed shooter can be accomplished. Just that it is more difficult to attain.

So if you want to shoot from the right then take a refresher course and we will keep you on the right side. So in reality we do have a "course" from the right. And I can understand that you might want to because of who you play with.

But here is the point to all this and please this is not being egotistical. Everyone I play with except for Nick who is left handed and shoots from stick right is better from the left side, and that includes me. I shoot from the right sometimes because we have a table take over. I will also shoot from the end sometimes because of how many friends are at the table. But I only shoot from those positions because I have a verifiable edge from those positions. I would never shoot from those positions if I didn’t have a verifiable edge, and I would shoot from those positions if I am by myself and if I am only playing with Nick. At those times, I will shoot from the left because that is where my edge is greater.

Everything is based in the verifiable edge.

So, if you want to learn how to shoot from the right, take a refresher and we will put you on the right only, and give you all you need to know to shoot from there

thank you Dom, that is what I needed to know. I was very excited to hear of the new class in Sept. for this very reason of learning right side technique. However the dilemma is I do not want to lose the left side and I certainly need a refresher with that also. Dilemma, dilemma, dilemma. Professor

Have any right handers learned to shot with their left hand from the right side?

Posted by: brothelman on April 6, 2014, 2:47 pm

Yes, but I only now shoot with the left I do not use the right or even practice with it.

Professor, I understand your desire to play stick right but I recall you did come in second in the no 7’s contest when you learned the shot from stick left.

If I was in your shoes, I would stick with my A shot from SL and take the refresher perfecting that shot.

ThomasH,
I am right-handed but I throw from stick right with my left hand. I also can throw from stick left with my right hand. After three years of being a switch hitter, I chose the side which made me the most money and produce the longest rolls. My practice time now is spent strictly from stick right with my left hand. I get twice as much practice for the same amount of time. I am an advantage player so if my spot is taken I just look for another table, or wait close by while watching the eye candy. My bankroll thanks me for choosing.
