Grading your throws

Spread the love

After a less than poor showing in Laughlin the last couple of nights after work (looked like my practice last weekend) I decide I am really better than this and the only thing to do was hit the practice rig when I got back tonight. Started out about like last night, just start to take off and seven out.

So I thought screw the dice outcomes let’s work on form and keeping the hook as Tommy reminded me last weekend. And to put a little heat on it I decided to score each throw from 1-10. 10 being the nice easy hit the wall and come straight back and stop in a couple of inches and one being a wobble split mess. I graded most of my roll between 6-9 with only two tens but I had a 49 roll.

Best practice roll that I have had in the last 18 months. So from now on I am going to keep scoring my form and see where this goes. Tonight may have been a fluke but I think the extrat effort to get all of the pieces working and "talking to myself" – Tommy, really was the reason. What a confidence boost after a lot of losses, struggles and disappointments on the casino tables. Going to hit it again early tomorrow to get my early morning game ready to roll. I truely believe It is about the form and the number will come. Thanks Tommy. TTN. And thanks to the others who gave me a few tips last weekend and who I watched and learned from. Looking forward to the Las Vegas classes this year.

There was a game on this site that they used that would do the same thing in past posts .
Good Rolling.

Finisher there was a "game" that I believe Dice Pilot put together but I don’t remember the details, so I am hesitant to try and tell about it. Hopefully DP will see this and post something.

It’s in the GTC Wisdom section
GTC Skill Test by Dice Pilot
One of his best contributions, I love this skill testing.

This section should be a first stop for any new members on the site, chock full of great info!

The majority of practice should never be about outcome. You should care less what numbers you roll. Practice is about refining your technique. It is just like going to the driving range in golf. You can’t worry about results and work on technique simultaneously.

What you did is exactly right. You focus on one issue, your grip, and watch the reaction of the dice. You obviously know what the dice reaction should be. So strive to achieve that reaction on every roll. Make slight modifications to your grip if the dice are not reacting properly.
The next practice session you can focus on your arm swing, etc.

At the end of my session, I will use some chips and play a couple of hands. If I am not getting the proper dice reaction in this simulated game, I stop and work on it at the next session.

About the only thing I do when I practice is work on my form. If that is correct the results will follow.

I do the same thing when I shoot in a live game. I watch the dice in the air and how they react once they hit the table. That is all the information I need in order to know what adjustments I need to make to my grip or toss.

Skinny the problem for me has been being able to make those adjustments at the casino table. I know this has been covered a lot on this forum, but we have several new players, could you maybe lists some of those adjustments you use. I know for example if the right die is fading behind the left its generally too much pressure from the ring finger or fingers are not level accross the front. Any extra tips would be appreciated.

You are correct in that if one die is lagging, that die probably has too much contact with the front finger. That finger may too low or the finger on the other die may be too high. Also your thumb may be not centered with too much contact on the die that is lagging. Essentially the die that is leading is coming out first and the lagging die is coming out later instead of at the same time.

If you see both dice bouncing to one side or the other when they hit the table you are releasing them at an angle. That is causing them to bounce to the side. The most common problem is hooking your hand inside on the back swing and then round housing the arm on the forward swing. At release your hand is usually tilted instead of square to the table and that causes the dice to bounce to one side. You need to focus on bringing the hand straight back and straight forward to correct the problem.

If you see the dice splitting in the air upon release instead of rotating together side by side you are most likely gripping the dice too tightly and pressing with the outside fingers. By doing that you are pushing your thumb through the dice upon release or you may be splitting the dice before release causing them to split apart and wobble in the air. Your grip should be light enough so that it only takes a feather on them to knock them out of your hand. Any more pressure than that is too much and causes problems with the release.

I also watch how the dice react off the back wall to see if I am throwing too hard or not. If they come off the wall with too much energy, I may either try to increase my arc, cut down on my back swing or move my arm slower with less energy to create a softer throw. I choose the correction based on the feel I have about the table and what I think will work best. Conversely if I am not hitting the wall hard enough (a rare occurrence) I will do the opposite of the things I just mentioned to give it more energy. It has happened on occasion when I played on tables that have larger dice. The larger dice tend to be a bit heavier and they die a lot sooner after hitting the table. I like playing with them because I find them easier to grip, but I need just a bit more energy with them than my normal toss.

Thanks for the mini refresher Skinny. Just made a copy of this to hang over the practice table.
