Going to a hotel in Vegas? Don't get taken for ride by a long-haul cab

Spread the love

Last year there were 3.6 million cab rides that originated at McCarran Airport, that’s 9.700 per day. A huge volume for any city.

Most cabs are hones guys that just want to drop you at your destination then go pick up another fare.

But there are the ones that like to take the "long way home" to jack up the fare.

For example, going to the Riviera on Paradise Road covers 6.4 miles in 16 minutes at $18.05, going on the Strip covers 5 miles in 18 minutes at $22.40; going by highway covers 9.3 miles in 21 minutes at $30.45.

Just recently the Nevada Taxicab Authority has posted a sign near the taxi cab line of approximate fares to 24 destination. A ride to Treasure Island should run between $20 to $25.25 via three sample routes. For years the unsuspecting crowds were overpaying for rides by as much as $20. Of course they never knew they were were being long-hauled until the ride back to the airport via a shorter route and much cheaper fare.

My solution has always been to rent a car in Vegas. The daily car rental rates in Vegas are some of the cheapest, and one cab ride will pay for your entire day of having a car. An if you can learn some of the back roads, traffic is not a problem.

Pit Boss, you are right on. Rose and Doc have been renting a car for years. We casino hop a lot which would be some 15 to 18 cab rides during a trip. 15 cab rides at $15 dollars each would be $225 total, probably more. Also Rose likes to head into the local conomy to shop so it would be way too much. Besides I have had rides with cab drivers in the past who were high on something and driving like idiots–100 to 110 mph on the expressway!!! It can be dangerous.

Thanks for the reminder.

Quick cab story and Arman is right be careful.

When I went to Vegas in June for our class I arrived at 3:00 AM and grabbed a cab to the O’rleans, driver went up Paradise to Tropicana and directly to the hotel and the fare was $20.25. When I returned to the airport after the class I got a cab at the O’rleans and the driver asked me which way I wanted to go, highway or city streets? I said take the least expensive route so the driver got on the Highway. When the fare got to $20.00 and we were still on the highway I said: I guess you took the most expensive route to the airport, when I took the cab to my hotel it was $25.00 including the tip, I guess your fair will be the same with out a tip for you. The driver immediately shut off the meter and we were still 10 minutes from the airport.

I guess he wanted his tip!!!!!! πŸ˜€

Airport Taxes & Fees

Remember to bear in mind that the base rate you’re quoted on rental fees will then be topped up by a whole raft of additional taxes and fees, particularly if you rent from the airport, where vehicle rentals are subject to additional charges.

Here’s the breakdown.

Nevada sales tax for car rentals is 7.75%. But all car rentals also require that you pay a 10% concession recovery fee, a 6% government license surcharge, a 4% license recovery fee, and 2% to fund the building of a performing-arts center and a training facility for culinary workers, plus a $3-per-day (or more) customer facility fee, if you’re picking up from the airport.

So, all told, non-locals pay 29.75% of the rental-car bill in taxes, plus $3 a day, to rent a car in Las Vegas. Locals, exempt from the 2% arts fund, pay the 27.75%, plus $3 per day.

If you don’t have to pick a car up at the airport and would be able and willing to go to one of the car rental offices in town, you might find that you get a better deal. The customer facility charge is a fee that the on-airport concessionaire is required to collect and pay to the airport and does not apply at non-airport rental offices, while it’s often β€” but not always β€” the case that you’ll find a lower base rental rate outside of the airport.

NOTE: Rental cars are no longer rented at the McCarran International Airport. You must take the free shuttle to the Rent-A-Car Center, 3 miles away from the airport. See Airport Information for details.

Even though I have car when in Vegas I some times take free shuttle offered by some casinos between property’s . Just tip a buck for a little entertainment . Safe drivers also so far.

By the time you get on line for the free airport shuttle, and get on line at the car rental, and get on line to get your car, it can take 2 hours by the time you are finished. We have stopped renting at the "airport," and take a short taxi ride to one of the hotels which rent cars. The last time, Hard Rock gave us a good rate, and it is right near Paradise Rd., which goes right to the airport on the return.

Unless you’re a first timer in LV you don’t know to tell the driver to take the back route to close in hotels. Paradise Rd. is the route you should be on to arrive at the hotels you can see in the distance from the airport. This route takes you to many intersecting streets which run behind the hotels and avoids much traffic. Stay off Rt. 15 (the highway), unless your are going to the old part of town in the North end. On one such trip up the ramp to the highway I asked the driver why he was going the long way when Paradise Rd. was the shortest to the Flamingo where I was staying. He stopped and tried to back down the ramp, but was unable. Realizing he was had he said the ride was free, although he never turned off the meter. Upon arrival at the hotel he was thanked for the free ride and I gave him his tip about 5 or 6 dollars. He surly had to apply that to the meter charge which he had to account for. If you have plenty of time and like large taxi bills take a ride down Las Vegas strip, otherwise avoid it. . TheUsualSuspect, Semper Fi carry on

Another good road is Kovel, parallel to the strip. You can enter many hotels from the rear on that road. When I first discovered it 20 years ago, it was always empty. Now it’s not empty, but still better than the strip.

I go for Bell Transportation. They’re right outside baggage claim and depart fairly often. It’s about $28 for a round trip. I’ve used them whenever I don’t rent a car.

This isn’t about taxis from the airport but if you have the time and want to get around the strip and go downtown…. try the SDX or DEUEX buses.. Cost only $6 for 2 hours , $8 for 24 hours or $26 for 3 days. Hope On ,Hop Off.
