LV – Downtown Grand News

Q: Did I hear right? The Downtown Grand is open and booked through Oct. 27 already? Did they have a grand opening?
A:
Like a classic game of "Telephone," what you heard was a garbled version of the facts.
Although we’ve never 100 percent understood why, our readers have something bordering on an obsession with the fate of downtown’s long-shuttered Lady Luck Hotel & Casino, a lovable old dive which, after many years boarded up, is finally due to reopen later this year as the totally reinvented Downtown Grand.

We have been receiving queries on an almost-weekly basis throughout this saga, inquiring as to the latest news, when often there isn’t any. On July 19, however, something happened.

We can relate the night’s events, thanks to a fan of VegasChatter — an eye-witness, who alerted the blog!

Late on the night of July 19 this person, evidently also a fan of the LL/DTG, happened to be searching online when he/she stumbled upon the Downtown Grand’s new website, which apparently had been launched when no one was looking and contained lots of before-unseen photos of the new joint’s interior. They located the booking engine and found the first available date was October 27. This person was not alone in finding the site, and an undisclosed number of excited but bemused people booked rooms, curious as to how they’d missed word of the opening.

What had happened, of course, was that the hotel’s techs had briefly launched the new site just for testing purposes, with the wee hours having been deliberately chosen to minimize the kind of accidental interest that led to those bookings being made. If you were one of the lucky ones who bagged a room, the hotel confirmed to VegasChatter that they will certainly honor those reservations. From that, we can deduce that while no official opening date has been announced, the hotel is confidently expecting to be able to accommodate guests from October 27 onward. Nightly rates were listed as starting at $59/night and evidently the hotel will be pet-friendly.

Other juicy details gleaned during the accidental infiltration include details of the planned dining offerings, which include a diner/bistro, a casual rooftop poolside eatery (so there’s a rooftop pool!), a sports book deli, a Hawaiian shaved-ice counter, and a funky sounding "food court" area, where funky fast-food concepts will be represented, including iheartburgers, 3rd STREET TACOS, Short Round’s Bao & Dumplings, and Coffee And Crepes. The Mob Bar will be relocating inside the Grand, which will also feature a couple of lounges and both indoor and outdoor gaming (yes, al fresco blackjack on waterproof tables, plus a walk-up streetside window at the sports book).
